Manafold bolts

Before I go overboard and tear the thing appart I was thinking the experts could give me some advise, please. Is it necessary to tear the carb off in order to access the manafold bolts? I have a tic, tic, tic and the beast is running rough. Seems to me it might be an intake leak. I have climbed under and it seems like an imposible task to reach the bolts from under. I have a rebuilt carb comming from JC so this might be an oppertune time to do both. Thanks for the help and advise.
 
That entered my mind (not really) but it goes away a bit when the enging gets hot and is not there at idle only durring acceleration. That lead me to think manafold. I will check the air rail though. Thanks for the thought. I had an FJ 40 when I was younger and never did any work on it. My dad and I rebuilt three Model "A" Pickups from the ground up. All you needed to work on those was a slot head, a cresent wrench and a big hammer. This FJ 60 and my sons FJ80 are now my project but I don't have a lot of experience with these so thanks for the help!
 
That's what we're here for - to bounce ideas off of one another and share experience.

The check valve is an easy check. Just pull the hose off of it and listen/feel while the truck is running. If there's any air blowing from the air rail into and out of the check valve, you need to replace it (even if that's not the source of the clatter) - I can't remember if mine had any dynamic changes like that...

The manifold is still a possibility though. That's a common problem too. I don't think you have to pull the carb, there's a chance that you could just go in and try tightening up the bolts and see what that gets you...
 
To answer your first question, I was unable to replace my intake/exhaust gasket without removing the carb. I think you can do it without removing the air rail as well, but it makes it hard. If you do have a faulty gasket, I recommend pulling it all off and learning a bit more about the engine.

FYI, you can go to your local toyota dealer and request a photocopy of the emissions system. The vacuum lines are a real drag to reconnect....it takes forever.
