Hello everyone,
This is my first post here. I just recently became the owner of a 2007 Land Cruiser and I've been doing small things here and there to fix what the previous owner had not. I'll post up a full-on build/maintenance thread soon.
The point of this post is to address the main wiring harness clamp under the hood that holds the wiring harness to the firewall. Like so many other vehicles I've seen, mine was broken when I got the truck. I've searched all over for a replacement part and the few part numbers that I've been able to find were either no longer available or the wrong size/wrong clamp. It seems that the clamp only comes with the complete wiring harness. Of course, if that information is incorrect please feel free to correct me. Anyway, I had some roll bar light clamps lying around from some other project. I decided to try these to replace the failed plastic piece. The clamps that I have are small 1.25" roll bar/handlebar light tabs. They're all over eBay and Amazon for less than $10 a pair. Only one is required for this application. The correct size would probably be for 1.5" roll bars or handlebars. I had to use longer screws in place of the supplied screws to get it to fit on the wiring harness. The screws I used were M5x25mm the screws that came with the clamps were m5x10mm.
I took the plastic clamp to work with me earlier this week to try and find a suitable replacement. I work with high voltage switchgear and breakers and thought we might have something similar for our control wiring and such that we do. That wasn't the case. Then I remembered I had the roll bar clamps at home and decided to give them a go. Based on measurements it looked like it would be a close fit with the 1.25" clamp.
This is the clamp that has failed.
Here is the failed clamp with the roll bar clamp I'm planning to replace it with.
I used a 1/4"x20 bolt with a couple washers and a nylon lock nut to secure it to the bracket where the plastic clamp attached to the firewall. I did not modify the bracket just in case I run across the correct replacement in the future. I try not to make irreversible modifications to my vehicles. Just a personal preference.
As I previously stated I had to use longer screws to hold the halves of the clamp together. I may order the larger sized clamp and throw in on there. Everything is secure and the clamp is not pinching the harness; I guess we will see how it holds up.
This is definitely overkill for holding the main wiring harness. But it was bothering me that the clamp had broken and I was unable to source a replacement.
Hopefully this will help someone else that's got the same issue. Whenever I decide to try the larger clamps I'll post a followup to show the fitment.
Thanks for looking!
