Yes, that is very common to have some fine shavings attach to the magnets, something like a fine dusts with sludge. Nothing to worry unless the fluid smell burnt.

Agreed! It is perfectly normal to have fine particles (grey sludge) when you pull the magnetic drain plug.

It really depends on how often you change your tranny (and or diff) fluid. I change it every ~8,000 miles and I don't have any shavings. I imagine if I waited for 30,000 I might see something.
