After some falling through of plans with some guys here Saturday, I went out with my brother on Monday. He lives out east in Mesa so he headed out to Saugaro Lake to play around out there.
We were a bit delayed after coming accross an injury accident on Val Vista just south of the 202. Seems a drunk couple were fighting in thier car and t-boned a car while running a red light. The two knuckle heads decided they didnt want to stick around to go to jail. So they decided to run away. Two off duty cops, one not armed (Guess which one I was) , the second carring not ONE but TWO guns off duty. (Gota love Sheriff Joe's Deputies.) The Deputy hands his second gun to the cop (who should have been carring in the first place) And the chase was on! A helicopter and 6 cops later the bad guys were off to jail and we were back off to the desert. The boys got a kick out of watching cops and robbers though the 80 sun roof. Took about 5 secs to tell mom when they got home... "MOM ,GUESS WHAT!!!!"
Sorry got a little side tracked. Back to the wheeling. So we head off to the dirt and I'm teasing my brother all the way cause he driving his wife's stock Suburban.
We head out some road on the very north side of the lake, where there is a loop and pinic area at the end of the paved road. The trip was fun and we mostly just played around. M bro took the low road mostly and I tried to climb everything is sight.
These were my lessons learned on the first day out:
33" tires and no lift SUCKS!!!
Your clean unscratched truck, doesn't stay unscratched for long if you wheel it.
LC's are cooler than Jeeps.
Land Rovers are cooler than Jeeps. But not as cool as LC's
If you wheel, things will brake. Esp if you gas it!!
It is possible to scare the crap out of yourself!! (SEE BELOW)
LC's do and will roll. Almost rolled it on my first day out.
If you cant make it up a hill, it is much more scary to back down. (SEE ABOVE)
And if you do have to back down, follow the line you came up!
And lastly, Running 35 PSI is great for the highway, but not for dirt.
At the end of the day a good time was had by all. Esp after I extricated myself from sliding two wheels off the side of the hill, when I didnt back down the right line. I swear that my rig was going to tip over at any minute.
Seems I tried to go up what is know as Suicide hill. It is at the end off a sand wash road that ends at a cove near the far north end of the lake. I made it 80% of the way up. The last 20% is steep and has steps. I think if I would have made it if I #1. aired down, #2. had more courage (I whimped out when I felt I could lean forward and kiss my hood) and, #3 had any skills. It was there that I wasn't paying attention and got off the line and nearly put her on her side when I backed down. After my failed attempt (kids watched from below) at getting the rig safely off the side of the hill. I find out the several trucks have rolled down that hill when they got in trouble. Oh so last lesson learned from my first day out. You can get yourself in a lot of trouble if you don't know what your doing. With that.... When do we go again?
