Anyone have a friend that can build me a pretty simple threaded gas can cap? I bought a new 5G Jerry can but turns out its some sort of custom thread or euro pattern and none of my old Blitz or Military nozzles will work. Not only did the company not post this on their site, but upon calling to inquire about nozzles for it, none are available!

How about making one out of something soft that will harden later? Bondo, jb weld, PVC or whatever. You could at least measure it and get dia x pitch to look around on McMaster-Carr for one?

Or maybe it's just a typical bunghole thread? Lol

I have considered a few options like what you mentioned. Thought about just trying to force-thread a piece of PVC pipe in there and adapt from there, but I don't think I'll find any pipe in the correct size (haven't looked yet though). Thought about the epoxy route, but scared that I won't be able to remove the threaded piece once it sets up enough to hold the thread pattern accurately. You think if I spray down the metal threads with something like non-stick cooking spray, it will prevent the epoxy from bonding with the metal and allow the piece to unscrew after it sets up without damaging the threads?

Can you show a pic and / or list the manufacturer?

I've a hard time believing there's no caps made for a can.

I could take pics, but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to tell any differences, just as I couldn't. They're so close that I ended up putting the Blitz cap threads and this cap's threads up to each other, help up the light, with one eye closed, and could JUST see the diameter difference. Just like the diameter, the threads were so close that I had to use my TPI gauge from the tap set to verify they're not the same.

As for who makes it, thats another aggravating part of the story. I purchased from Moore Parts which specializes in sand rail cars, yet I get the can and it has a big sticker across the bottom that says "fueltanksusa.com" or something like that. I go to that site and there's not much more than just a home page. Hell, the tank I bought I couldn't even locate on the site!

I agree that replacement caps should be available; as well, dispensing nozzles should be available. However, they said no nozzles are even being produced as of yet and that individual replacement caps cannot be ordered. I think I'm gonna call again and demand either they order a cap (for me to fab a nozzle) or they give me their supplier's contact info.

You don't think the gas caps listed on the site will potentially fit? I'd give them a call - I bet those caps work on both the large thanks and jerry cans.

None of the ones on either site [that I see] will work. The ones on Mooreparts.com are about half the diameter and female threaded, and the ones on fueltanksusa.com are also female threaded.

Just got off the phone with fueltanksusa and they do not have nor can get replacement caps or pour nozzles of any kind. Their reasoning is that they sell these as water cans, not fuel cans and also people buy them a lot for display purposes only.

Back to the drawing board. :frown:

I could have easily bought one of their tanks with the smaller opening that even comes WITH a pour nozzle for the same price had I only known. But I guess they sell more by NOT disclosing everything. :bang:

Gaaaahhh! That is infuriating. Well, if you can somehow measure the diameter and the threading, I'm betting there's an off-the-shelf solution out there somewhere...

Sorry for your troubles.

Thanks for the empathy.

I agree that somebody, somewhere has got to have something to work.... but after about three days of searching Google, I've found jack $h¡t.

It's threads are 2.25"OD with an 11.5tpi pitch. The Blitz caps are 2.32" (or thereabouts) with 12tpi. So I spent about an hour shaving down the Blitz cap, threadfiling it (at 12tpi cause I don't have an 11.5tpi ANYTHING [who the hell would!?]), and force-threading it into the tank. It isn't going to work perfectly, but I think its going to get me by for GSMTR at least. I'll regroup after that and see which way to go.

I took your 2.25OD x 11.5 TPI and converted to metric, got about 57mm x 2.2 pitch. The closest thing in my book metric wise is M56x2.0 (metric pitch is measured thread to thread not TPI obviously).

Next I looked at 2" NPT which shows OD of 2.25" x 11.5 TPI exactly! I would lean towards this but in my opinion it needs to be NPT (straight thread) not NPT tapered thread so it seals properly. Check this out. http://www.mcmaster.com/#fuel-caps/=ml5c6b

Hmmmm... I could swear I'd already checked 2" NPT physically at the store, but maybe not. I will certainly check again now though. Thanks for the info!
