If you could get either one for within $100 of the same delivered price, which would you get to mount on an FJ40, and why?

What's the difference in weight between the two?
Are you ever going to want to run Saginaw power steering?

An 8,000 lb. winch is plenty for most 40's. 12,000 lbs is way overkill unless you like to get stuck in mud up to your hubs or something.

Depends on your type of wheeling and the weight of you rig when fully loaded. For most situations I would gone with the M8000 but if your rig is 8000 lbs or you bury it in mud to the frame I would go with the VR12000.

Yes, it has a Saginaw PS conversion.
Does that preclude using some types of electric wenches?

The Saginaw takes up some space inside your frame rails, so just make sure the M12000 isn't too long to fit, or just mount it on a plate above the frame rails. Pretty sure that the M8000 will fit inside the frame rails even with a Saginaw though - think that others here have done it.

X2 .. and I don't buy the snatch block idea unless you are talking about 8274 with plenty of cable ..
