I was wondering if there was someone with an extra lunette casting (accepts the lunette ring, spans the draw-bars, and attaches the leg) they could make a couple measurements on?

I have a Japanese type-73 trailer which has a single lunette mounting hole which is mounted above the draw-bars. This places my ring 8" above the receiver center-line on my '05 Jeep Liberty CRD. To place the hitch high enough to level the draw-bars, I need to bring the hitch up the 8", which puts it in the middle of my spare tire. This requires me to bring the hitch mounting plate out over 12" from the receiver hitch. I am not exactly excited with that, and want to look at different options before I go through the process of creating a super long pintle mount.

If I can mount a standard M416 lunette casting to my draw-bars, I would be able to put the lunette ring in the "low" position effectively lowering it about 4-5" from stock. This would allow the use of a much shorter/lower/safer pintle level under the edge of the spare tire. I am mostly using the trailer for dirt roads, and hauling gravel/dirt/lumber/camp gear, so no heavy trail use requiring very large articulation on the vertical axis. Before I spend the money on one of these lunette castings, I was wondering if anyone had one they could pull a couple measurements off of to make sure it is remotely possible?

I need the following:

- dimensions of draw bar W+H where it bolts to the lunette casting
- width between draw bar mounting surfaces at the beginning of the lunette casting, and the end of the draw bar seats.
- length of the above mounting surface
(previous two will allow use of geometry to figure out angle off center line of draw-bars to see if mine are compatible with the casting)
- ID of large bolt hole
- distance from large to a point centered between both small bolt holes

...or if anyone has one of these within 45min of Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN that would be willing to have me over to take measurements... that would work too.

Thanks in advance
Rich

I dont know but I'm just tossing this out there but will a lunete eye from one of the bigger trailers (M105 etc) that has the bend in it work ?

I have both a M416 and a M101 CND sitting outside and I can take a look in the morning

I took some measurements to illustrate what exactly I am trying to do. (all measurements were done with a simple tape-measure, hard to reach places are eye-balled)

As you can see, the spare tire poses a big issue with the mounting of a hitch, and getting the drawbar level. I need to bring the mounting plate out 12" from hitch face, and with the hitch pin at 2-1/4", that leads to a very long and potentially floppy pintle mount.

The current lunette ring is 1" center-center over the high position in the M416 casting, and 4" over the low position. If I am able to use the M416 lower lunette casting, I would drop the lunette 4" below its current position. This would bring it under the spare tire, and able to mate with a shorter, and stronger pintle mount.

The lunette casting has a flange to flange measurement of 5-1/2" on the wide end, and 1-5/8" on the short end. With an end to end of 5-1/4"

The lunette casting has two mounting holes (I can easily drill the draw bars, or lunette casting for the M416's 2 bolt style) bolts are 3-1/2" center to center, and the drawbar dimensions are 1-5/8" wide and 3" tall.

I hope this helps.

dude you need to get that jeep lifted... here is a great site for a 2.5 inch lift.
All J Products - Jeep Liberty KJ Products, ARB bumpers, Daystar, Frankenlift, Super Skid, Rancho, OME and more
and if you go here... you can see how some of the guys have used clevis's to make it a solid 3 inch lift. That's what I am going to do.

I am going with the Frankenlift II for the CRD.... but that is a ways down the road. Need to save my allowance a bit.

I am LOST already, SN there is Rich

X2 Lift the Jeep and kill two birds with one stone. As a last resort you can get a 12" hitch extension from Harbor frieght to extend pintle out beyond the spare. HF extensions are HD 2". I thought about putting one on my 40 to lengthen the tongue to make it easier to back up my M101 CDN.

I bought a M416 lunette and found the following;

- the measurements are a bit off from the Japanese lunette, but with the ability to adjust the angle of the draw bars, it is compatable

- the 416 uses a large bolt a hair smaller than the Japanese. I had the lunette honed out, while I was picking up heads at my machinist

- after the hone work, I found the bolt needs to be 15mm longer.

- the Japanese lunette ring fits PERFECTLY in the 416 casting.

- there are a few other projects that will come before the lift. But... when the current tires wear down, the 15's and new rubber will require the lift :D
