I wouldn't carry the cans on their sides. The caps tend to leak after long-term exposure to fuel.

that's not so obvious to me. Often rubber or elastomeric style seals stay in better shape if wetted than if dry. Plus you'd see the leak and it's outside so no big deal. I would not worry about that much.

I am just speaking from experience, but our cans had much more use than what I am sure he will have with his.... and maybe JP8 is a bit more corrosive than gasoline?

I guess I am just saying, watch them, as the do leak despite the manufacture's claims. Not only is gasoline not good for paint, but it is bad for ole' mother earth, so watch out when you are on the trail.
 
I've carried NATO cans on their sides (mounted to my trailer) for years without any issues or leaks. No experience with Scepter cans mounted ot the sides, though.
 
Just about all the cans we had on our trucks in Iraq leaked around the seals at one time or another. I am just saying... watch out.
