Pulled my winch apart and replaced solenoids that were bad. While off, I took everything (kind of) apart and cleaned and painted. I pulled the motor out and painted the housing (see pic) and thought I got it back togethe properly. Apparently not. Now in the free spool mode, the winch will go in and out fast. When in gear, it won't move. It sounds like the gear is hitting something. Any help?

Take it back apart and start over. Got an exploded view diagram?

If you didn't have extra parts after putting it back together you're ahead of the game. My best guess is you installed the friction/clutch disks backwards.

You're going to have to take it apart to get fixed anyway.

I've been looking at a few threads and some schematics. I think something with the brake came loose when I pulled the motor / housing off the main body. I remember hearing a clink, but was able to reinstall the motor shaft back into the main housing. Not sure, but I guess I'll need to crack the main body open and take a look.

Talked with WARN and have a new brake assembly on order..... We'll see if that works. I'll take a few pictures and post my progress after I get the parts and open it back up.

Yes, yes I see now....
you funny guy.

An appropriate response 3 days ago might have been,
"oh, that happened to my rusty, trusty M12000 ten years ago. It sounds like the brake mechanism let go on ya....happened to mine. If i were you, I'd start there and take the drum off and inspect the brake" or something like that which actually contributes to the collective wisdom of the group.

Or not.....

Never owned a WARN winch. But mechanical stuff is usually pretty simple. No sweat dude. Things are more obvious to some than to others. Enjoy the project and gain knowledge then you can pass it on when someone else needs help.:)

Update: Finally got around to getting after this project. The problem was the brake assembly. I ordered a new one and installed. I should have taken picks, but basically you pull off the guides (3 x 12mm nuts) from the gear side and disconnect gear, drum and motor from one another. The brake is located inside the drum. I pounded away to attempt to get it out pulled the lock ring. Doh. The brake assembly fell apart and came right out. When installing the new brake assembly, keep it in the cardboard sleeve and slide it into the drum so as to not allow it to fall apart/unwind, etc. Done.

Thanks for the info, I want to pull mine apart to run through. Mine seems really loud but works fine, these a little on the louder side?
