Well, I've been looking at buying a trailer for awhile, and I've finally found a good one here locally. Before I pull the trigger on it I am looking for some info on building one up. Has anyone built up from a M116A2 into tent/offroad trailer, and has anyone changed the bolt pattern to match their Cruiser. I'll be pulling it behind my new (to me) '97 FZJ80. Thanks for the help.

The M116 is the flatbed version of the 3/4 ton M101 (US) trailer. It was designed to carry generators and other equipment. It is a heavy duty trailer, and is a bit of the heavy and bulky side for vehicles smaller than a full size pickup. It's probably the largest trailer you'd care to pull behind a Land Cruiser.

As for changing the bolt pattern, you'd be better off swapping out the whole axle and installing a new 3500 lb axle assembly.

Frankly, I'd be looking for a smaller jeep size trailer for off roading. It's loaded weight will be about the same as the M116's empty weight.

I've been looking for a M416 for awhile, but the price difference and quality is huge between the two. These M116A2's come up for sale at Fort Lewis every week in good condition with working breaks for about 300, but I can't find a M416 for under 500 and even then they are pretty rusted out. I'm almost to the point of building one from scatch, thanks for the advice though. I kinda figure that would be what came out of it.

This issue has been discussed b4 on mud. I would make a good pull in and drop off base camp, but is too big and heavy to make a good trail trailer. If you are on wide established trails you would be alright but for tight hilly trails it wont be functional. Those 3/4 ton trailers are really heavy unloaded not to mention when you start loading it down. With all of the room the 3/4 ton you will be tempted to haul more stuff than you really need. I would love to see one built out as an expo. trailer though I think that it would be really cool. As a side note trailer brakes on the 3/4 ton for a LC would be a must. I believe that some of them came with surge brakes though.
