So I moved to Australia and brought the M101CDN with the camper top, a bit of a re-import of the camper top as it still has the made in Australia triangle sticker on it
The rules for registering non-standard trailers are quite strict here and I wanted to document the process in case anyone else wants to come half way around the world to play.
The trailer requires approval for importation before you ship it as it is classified as a vehicle. Once it gets here you need to get a compliance certificate of compliance to Australian Design Rules (ADR) or other regulations as required.
I went to see Sean Kelly at http://www.srkengineering.com.au he was happy enough to help. Even worked with my schedule to get this done on a Saturday.
I had to re-wire the trailer for the australian lights and plug.
I took this opportunity to get a replacement for the pintle hitch and get a treg style poly block offroad hitch fitted. I had this reviewed by the compliance guy before I spent the money to have a machine shop do the work, basically creating the new shaft with a taper and threads, etc copied from the pintle hitch.
Here is a photo of what I ended up with as a replacement for the hook and pintle. The poly block treg hitch was bought used from ebay here in Australia and included all the fittings to bolt it to a standard trailer. I had the machine shop disassemble it and reused the part in the photo along with the u-shaped bit that bolts where the trailer ball would normally go. The machine shop used 4140 steel for the shaft and I asked that they make it a little longer. This is the max I could go so the stock safety chains still reach the trailer hitch without modification.
The shaft still swivels in the trailer fitting holes and the hitch works great, much quieter over corrugations than the pintle!
Next I took a ride to the vehicle inspection shop for rego, and next I will be headed to the road and traffic Authority (RTA) for number plates and road registration.
The Total cost ....... if you have to ask you don't want to know.
Used TREG hitch - 80$
Machine shop - 340$
Compliance certificate - 690$
Rego - 70$
RTA plates and on road - TBD
Like I said you don't want to know
