Hi all,

I'm looking for a canvas top for my 101A2 3/4 ton trailer. I have a hydraulic tubing bender so I'm going to make the bows. Prob use 1" round .120" wall tubing welded to steel rectangle pieces that will slid inside the mounts on the trailer. Does anyone have the bow dimensions as far as height from trailer floor the top of the bows? And how far over the trailer mounts does the bow extend upward on the sides?

As mentioned above, I'm looking for the canvas top as well. Do these tops stay in place on the interstate? I have to pull quite a ways to trailheads.

Thanks,

TFJM

Check over on Steelsoldiers.com, trailer forum and classifieds. There are several good companies and individuals, who sell them.

I can measure the bows for you, tomorrow, if need be.

The tops stay on, if they are tied to the hooks. The bows slide into the brackets down the sides. I have towed them alot and no problems.

Awesome! Yeah some measurements on the bows would be great. If you can measure one while the bow is sitting on the ground upright that should work. It looks like they are flat all the way across, is that correct?

Thanks, I'll check steelsoldiers as well.

I can measure my bows tomorrow--but mine are all Mahogany(except for the corners). These are easy to make-but the wood is a little pricey now. Some folks claim the trailers that used wood had White oak, but I haven't seen any of that--wht oak is too susceptible to humidity, bugs, and rot(not sure why the military would use something like this)

Sggoat, that's odd. I have 2 M105's and an old M101, that are all oak. All the rest of my trailers are metal. Even my M35 and M37 bows are oak. Maybe the Gov. just bought what was available?

I do know the wood ones are a pain. They warp, and paint peels over time. Even the troop seats and side rails are oak.

I like the newer side rails, which are a composite, nice.

I think I'll stay with metal. It's not cheap any more but I've got a bunch of heavy wall 1" round that I'll weld to the rectangle inserts I make.

Not having much luck on the top. I put a want ad on Steel soldiers...nothing yet. Do the 101A2 tops fit anything else? That way I can open my search a bit if they do.

Just a followup to the post on Mahogany bows--The person I bought my A2 from has 7 more of them--all have Mahogany bows. Mine(and others he has ) were made in Pa. in and around 1989. They are all painted camo(latex, I think) Once the old paint comes off- you find the beautiful wood underneath.
