hey everyone! I have a couple of questions that i've been doing my research on and wanted to verify a few things before placing online orders.
  1. will taillights made for 98-05 land cruisers be plug and play with my 99 LX? i've seen a few different posts on this but each has differed slightly. in a post by 1loudlx it says that all housings should at least be plug and play. has anyone tried putting the spyder tail lights that they say are for a 98-05 lc in a lx before the tailgate/tail lights were updated? this is the link for what i'm looking at specifically 98-05 Toyota Land Cruiser Euro Style LED Tail Lights - Red / Smoked 111-TLAN98-LED-RS By Spyder
  2. has anyone removed the stock resonator and muffler and welded in a aftermarket muffler using the stock piping and ended up springing for an actual cat back like the doug thorley? i'm trying to figure out if going from 2.25 diameter exhaust to 2.5 will really make any difference especially if i can get a muffler welded in the stock location w/ stock piping much cheaper. i haven't really gotten much from the threads i've read comparing the two options. i don't want to end up having to pay more because i didn't want to spend more the first time
  3. where should i start when trying to figure out what is causing me to have to turn on my headlights in order for my blinkers to work correctly. if i don't turn them on then all of the blinkers and tailights flash at the same time. from what i've found this is not too uncommon and may have something to do with the towing wiring harness. i haven't had too much time to see what i can find or troubleshoot this. it looks like the wiring on my lx has definitely been messed with back there when i opened it up and took a look.
thank you for reading my wall of text! i'm coming from an 04 tacoma and look forward to building this truck up as well. i will try to document my progress. cheers!

bumping my own thread but now my main concern is the headlight/blinking issue. this is requiring me to run my headlights at all times and i'm not sure if it's coincidence but i've gotten a few burned out bulbs. does anyone have suggestions for where i should start with this? i might take it to the dealer but i'm not sure how helpful that will be.

Hopefully someone with more electrical troubleshooting experience will chime in, but if it were me, I'd be digging into the electrical wiring diagram to understand how the headlights and blinkers get power as well as testing the associated grounds.

The dealership is probably the last place I'd take my truck for this, they'll likely tell you that the entire harnesses need to be replaced.

Good luck

On my 2000 LX I know the 2000 LC high mounted brake light is the same. I would suggest you look them both up on a site that offers part numbers such as toyodiy.com - I've not yet run across any part that was the same but for which Toyota listed it by a different number between the LC and LX.

Regarding the lights...back in the rear I have a plug connector that joins the wiring running down the frame to the wiring that goes to the trailer connection. If you have that try unplugging it and see if the problem goes away. If you don't have it, can you see a place where a PO tried introducing some sort of spliced wires? To my thinking this would be much more likely than a main wiring harness going defective.

that is true. i am the last person that wants to go to the dealership. time to add amateur electrician to my resume if i can make any headway on this.

Thanks for the suggestion. i went on the site and found the same part for both trucks. the first number seems as if it is the generic part number and then they differentiate between the lc and lx light with the second number. just to clarify what you said, are you saying that as long as the parts share the same part #, they have fit in your experience?
lc:
81551D LENS & BODY, REAR COMBINATION LAMP, RH
81551-60570

lx:
81551D LENS & BODY, REAR COMBINATION LAMP, RH
81551-60590

If you apply it to the whole, longer, number, then yes, that is what I am saying. But the difference in the last two numbers you list means there is some difference. I don't know anyone with an LC or I'd be willing to check and see if the difference was simply cosmetic, or if there was a physical difference (like for the headlamps).

EDIT: Just went to two online sites I sometimes use to look for OEM parts and the wiring seems different between the LC and LX for the 200 MY anyway. The LX diagram shows two sockets/bulbs for the outer portion of the taillight. And the LC diagram shows three sockets/bulbs.

There was a recall for towing harness - not sure for 99, but my 98 was included. The new harness was not working when I bought the car, so I replace with aftermarket model. This is probably a long shot, but it is free and take only a minute to do, have you tried unplugging the towing harness and see if that fix your problem?
