ok new to the site been reading tons of old threads and I'm new to these trucks usually work on Audi's. Anyway as it says I need to replace the lowers already have them my questions are can I simply unbolt the shocks since there air or is that going to damage them, also the thread on the DIY has all the pics down so I'm trying to figure this out as I go? How do I release the clips holding the ball joints in?

Dig a bit deeper when searching...
This thread has the pics intact: Ball joint & ABS unit replacement plus stuff.. on 98LC W/151K
Generally, all the posts from 2001lc are very informative.

Btw, the "shocks" are not air. Only the spheres/globes/gas-springs are. Put the car in Low before you start, and the pressure is off.

Those ball joints are a PITA. Especially the lowers. I managed to mangle and remove the old ones with the rental tool at Autozone but I'd HIGHLY recommend taking the LCA (lower control arm) and new ball join replacement to a machine shop to get it installed if you don't have the correct fitting and right tools available. I (and the machine shop even) ruined the new ones trying to install them). But yes, you'll need to remove damn near everything to get it out of there.

Ouch. When I did all four joints it took a while to figure things out, but nothing got destroyed... I had the Autozone tool and got all four 555 joints from Cruiser Outfitters. I could probably do the whole car again in 4 hours now that I’ve had practice.

You don't even need to unbolt the front shock.

Once you get all the other s*** unbolted and up out of the way as mentioned. To get the big metal clip, you just need a metal punch/big flat head screw driver to carefully tap it out with a hammer from under the lip, easy does it from both side and or one side and you shouldn't send it flying to far.

You will need the big c clamp ball joint press to install it, but honestly, don't judge me to much, but my favorite is a 5lb ball pen hammer if your good with it and can hit what your aiming at to remove it.

There's some good write ups you need to search for that will show you what you can use to make the install easier.

Once you get the knuckle off, is pretty simple. To get it out use the rental from autozone, the get it in, go buy a 2in nipple from home depot, works like a charm. The rental tool is slightly bigger and doesn't get it all the way in.
No need to touch the shocks.
Remember to remove the C clip from the axle before disconnecting the upper ball joint.

Ok thanks for the tips I'm also going to have to remove the entire arm because I have a press is there a certain way to release the torsion bar so the suspensions is completely screwed?
