New to the forum but a long time lurker to IH8, and almost a new owner of a 2005 LX470. I found a really nice and clean LX but it has some bad U-Joints on the rear driveshaft. Upon tear down of the u-joints, brand new OEM u-joints do not fit in the holes on the pinion flange for the bearing caps. I wondering if anyone has any ideas as what could be going on here. Aftermarket driveshaft, maybe a driveshaft out of another Toyota (Sequoia/Tundra)? Definitely strange that the caps fit in the driveshaft but not the pinion flange. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the parts. Maybe if someone has a photo of their OEM driveshaft, I might be able to compare to see if it is OEM of aftermarket. Thanks .

You can just buy an OEM rear shaft from toyota for ~$500 dollars. I tried replacing my u-joints and it was nothing but a headache. After a week of work, I bought a new shaft anyway.

I've never come across another driveshaft that fits the 100 series, but the early and late 100 had different sized shafts, which probably means different u-joints. Could have the 'wrong' one for your year, though I have no idea if the drive flange on the axle and trans would fit a mismatched year driveshaft.

See the section describing the 2003 changes.

I disagree. If it turns out that OP has an aftermarket DS, just buy a used OEM DS from a junkyard for $150 and put your new u-joints in. U-joint replacement is pretty straightforward and all of the joints on the DS can be swapped in an hour with the right sized sockets, vice, block of wood, and hammer...

First thing I would do before proceeding forward is to recheck the part numbers for the new u-joints that you have, relative to your LX's model year and code. Get code from the sticker on your doorjamb, go to Partsouq.com and select your model year, filter by the code from the doorjamb, and then go through the powertrain section until you find the subsection for the DS. Correct part numbers will be in there.

I can't disagree with your description of the process, but I've done at least three other driveshafts on different vehicles and not had the issues I did with my 100. The shaft I replaced the ujoints in never got as smooth as the brand new one from toyota, unfortunately, and I was out a ton of time, cost of the ujoints, and cost of a new shaft.

Obviously, each person will have a different experience. Good luck, op!

I agree that buying a new OEM driveshaft would be the easiest and quickest option, and the one that will remove most frustration and guesswork. If OP can afford it, do it! I, on the other hand, am a penny-pinchin’ glutton for punishment 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks everyone. I agree that I need to just get an OEM driveshaft (especially if its only $500) and be done with it. Where I live, junk yards are far and few between and I would feel pretty luck to find one.I also have a baby on they way and don't really have the time or patience to fight missed-matched u-joints. I am still curious as to why there would be missed matched u-joint. I will do a little digging with part number on Partsouq.com. Thanks again guys!

Buy any chance did you order ujoints for the front shaft? They have different part numbers then the rears. Possible mishap. I'm in the same boat with my rear end. 162k on my 05 LX. Cost more but less headache. Drop in new shaft.

front # is 0437160060 8/02 and forward.
rear # is 0437160070 8/02 and forward.

Kind of expensive on partsouq, I don't remember where I got mine but I think they were less than 44 $ each
