I'm going to swap my engine in the near future with a newly built one and thought it would be good to have the "new to me" transmission refreshed. Who should I take a naked trans to for a minor overhaul (soft parts, clutches, fluid, filter, etc.)? Murf, is this best served in your court? Any ideas what it would cost and if the torque converted needs special attention? The "new" stuff has 125K miles on them.

80 series transmissions are amazingly tough units. My opinion would be to perform a complete flush on it, replace external seals, and call it good especially with only 125K on it. Its not like a 700R4 Chevy (sorry but true). In my 17 years with Toyota, it is extremely rare to see a LC trans that needs rebuilt or has an issue and will most likely last as long as the overall truck does. Save your money in my opinion.

Im overly anal with my vehicle and do preventative items to the point of overkill yet I don't ever expect to ever go into my trans.

If you still want to do it, that's fine too - its up to you.

Great, thanks Murf! That's where I started but I wanted to make sure I cover my bases. It's my prior Chevy TH350 and TH700R4 experiences that give me that uncertainty by the way. :)

Next question, how does one bench flush a trans? I can drain it, roll it over and do the filter and gasket but then what? Or should I just replace seals put it some cheap (compatible) fluid and take it back to you for a flush and filter Murf?

Since you can, set the torque converter on a bucket and let it drain. Then fill it up, swish it around and drain again. Be sure to fill it before you reinstall it. I do a transmission drain and fill every other engine oil change, so every 10 k. A gallon of good ATF is cheap and my cruiser just hit 250k with no transmission issues.

Last time I was at Transtar there was a new flier there stating they offer a shift kit for the 95 and newer Cruiser transmissions. It was like 80 bucks if I remember correctly... Believe it had new boost valves and springs for the VB to increase line pressures, which essentially helps reduce clutch failure.

Thanks folks. I opted to leave my existing tranny alone and let Murf's crew do the HG for me.

May be the best option for you... Having a motor in pieces can be a hand full! Good luck

It's the budget, funding fell apart. Having an engine apart is no problem. That's the fun part!
