I recently brought a late 2008 200 V8 diesel and have noted that the oil pleasure gauge sits on 1/4 doing 2000rpm I changed the oil which looked thick but couldn't change the filter as I am traveling and don't have the required tool to remove the filter, if I push it to around 3000rpm it will go to 1/2 way. I am thinking that this was probably doing this when I brought it

Not sure if this is the same for diesels but the gasoline V8 engines usually sit at just above 1/4 and when revved should sit around 3/4 after you come off the gas pedal on the over run. This is how my 4.6L 1UR-FE reacts. I'm running fully synthetic oil and i don't treat it like a princess. Diesels usually run thick oils to begin with so you should expect some variation.
