Hey all!

I just did an Injector changout. Engine has about 330K and no previous history that i am aware of. Injectors from 4wheelauto were installed with new washers and everything. I am getting a louder diesel knock now than with the old injectors. This is normal? engine starts and runs smoother, idles smoother down low (650-700rpm) Juat checkin......

Quick side question--- Anyone ever uae a meth-injection kit on a turbo 3b? results? Paired with an intercooler i think this would be a good investment. Washer fluid is cheap!! :p :D
Cheers!

Is 4wheelauto a parts retailer or a diesel injection shop? Its hard to say what is the problem,or if there is a problem.
Do you have any extra smoke, what colour,or any other symptoms besides the increased knock?
What were your old ones like?
To get the most out of an injector rebuild, the injectors need to be correctly adjusted.
I would ask the vendor what exactly has been done.

These posts would do better in the diesel forum.

4wheelauto farms their injector rebuilds out to a injections shop. I spoke to the owner and asked him in detail before I bought these. The old injectors had quite a bit of carbon build up on the tips. Overall the truck runs really good. bit more power at lower fuel settings, and from what I can see from the first full tank, better mileage. less smoke than before and only when spiking the throttle from idle. It's not a menacing knock, like something is wrong, just more pronounced than before. sounds like a little cummins or a tractor. Ill run some stanadyne through her see if it changes at all.

Yea I shouldve posted in the diesel forum...

...

Its probably the sound of efficent fuel injection:D

I think the Stanadyne will be a waste of money as the tips are already clean from the rebuild.

Thats what im thinkin. seein as im gettin 700kms to a tank with over an 1/8th left. Mixed city hiway. Before was 575km pushing under an 1/8th tank before filling.

To follow up, the knock is still there, and it comes and goes gets louder and quieter depending on temps. i did run some stanadyne lubricity formula and it helped a bit. i figure ill just get used to it.....until something explodes lol. run it. it either wear in or wear out. cheers

Reviving this old thread. Im going through the same thing, anyone else have this happen to them also?

Just guessing here, but a cleaner injection event with better atomization will lead to a faster cleaner burn and thus more audible knock?

What I do know is the Toyota diesels I've seen that have a more pronounced diesel sound seem to be the ones that are in the best shape, easiest starting, best fuel economy etc. (Most of the cruisers in our local club are diesel, and I've been around them a lot).

When I've given people a ride in my Prado they tell me it sounds like a gasser....LOL. I'm looking forward with anticipation to my injector rebuild and turning it back into a diesel. Hoping for benefits like easier cold starting, better economy etc.

Basically I think it's a good thing Jarrat.....

After much research and talking with my brother who works at a diesel shop, I'm pretty sure its normal for it to get a little louder. It sounds more like POSTOY's LJ78 (his motor has always been louder than mine). I've also noticed my egts have dropped even more coming up this huge hill that I drive up almost daily and I seem to be getting better fuel economy and it seems to have a little bit more power. However, the truck sounds like it has a slight miss on a cylinder at low RPMS only, almost not noticeable.....

I was having problems with one of my injectors when I was pop testing them, with it not popping like the others and it did leak when I first assembled them. (I think it might be a defective nozzle or some debris got into it some how, even though I was SUPER, SUPER clean with everything). I took that injector apart and cleaned it completely again and then checked it again on the pop tester. I'm second guessing myself now and maybe should of tested it more.

Anyways, I ebay'd another set of nozzles and will be rebuilding my 3rd set now, and I'll install them hopefully before the weekend and see what happens after that.

I feel like an idiot. After buying new nozzles and rebuilding the injectors that came out of my truck, when I went to take out the old ones and I guess I missed tightening up one of the injectors. *sighs*

I however I continued on and installed my old injectors that I just re-did back into my truck changing them all out again and it started up with the same normal loud knocking sound. But after a 10 minute drive it's almost back to how it used to be.... quieter.... still a little louder, but not NEARLY as loud. Truck is running amazing now also.. starts perfectly, no smoke, seems faster.... I'll update my lj78 build thread with how I did my injector install later this week....

The Lj78 has the 2l-te motor. I used the 2L, 3L, 5L (RM520E Manual) specs for test popping on the injectors on my pop tester I made. You can buy a pop tester off ebay for around a $100 bucks US, and possibly find new nozzles to rebuild yours. I researched youtube for injector rebuild tips and tricks also. Only thing I can stress the most is keep everything really clean, and follow the instructions in the manual exactly. You could also just buy a brand new set of injectors off eBay for a little bit more money and then just install them your self.

ok thank you very much!
I am going to search for this manual, I assume it's possible to find it online...
and next year when I'm up north to visit I'll try to find a pop tester to bring down...chances are I will achieve having the only one in the country haha

*(edit)
ok I found the manual for the "ECD-V3" injection pump, apparently for the 2l-turbo...I noticed in the manual that it's written in '96, my LJ78(79?) is a '93, with a 3L, will this be the same pump, can I use this manual?

again thanks

Rebuilt my injectors yesterday with the same nozzles and process you used. I had EXACTLY the same problem as you with the last injector I did, except I could not fix it. Not sure what I'm going to do now. I assume I got one bad nozzle, because I took the injector apart and re-did it about four times (checking for debris or something I did wrong with the lapping etc.) and it did not fix the problem. It sort of pisses at a certain pressure if I pump slowly on the tester. However if I pump fast it cracks normally at the right pressure.

Anyhow, sure was time to do my injectors! And even with the one injector not working right, the truck is easier to start and has more power. And definitely more knocking...which could partly be the bum injector with it's issues....

Going to pull them again sometime in the next week and try to sort out what the heck the problem is. Don't really want to buy a whole set of more nozzles/injectors but will if I have to.

Pm'd you about your injectors....

My truck isn't as great after a couple days of running it and my last post on here..... It's back to normal now for loudness (quiet again). Still starts easier though, but I still get a tiny cloud of black on start for 1 second after I start it in the mornings, and the colder it is the worse it's getting. I was up 2000 meters this weekend camping in the mountains in -2c weather overnight and starting the truck it ran REEEEEEAAALY bad for a couple of minutes until it warmed up after sitting for 48 hours. Soon as I came home again though it starts great again. Not looking forward to this winter. Fuel consumption is still about the same... 10-14 liters per 100k depending on highway or town driving, and definitely more power still..... Might just need new glow plugs, or cycle them longer......

I downloaded the manual- will this work for my 3L? I'm coming across a few little things that are slightly different- perhaps I can follow the principles of the manual but not all the specs...it's kinda crazy in Central America they fix everything by welding
