My 2002 Cruiser with 120k miles recently developed an issue. When stopped and in gear, reverse or drive, there is a loud high pitched rattling coming from near the transmission area. Rattling may be a bit on the tame side, but banging noise sounds like a little too much. Somewhere between a rattle and clank. The noise goes away in park and neutral as well as when driving. Only audible when in gear and completely stopped.
Thoughts? Transfer case? Torque converter?
Planning on taking it in to a mechanic, but was hoping to educate myself a bit.
