I made a u-turn this morning and lost power steering almost instantly after coming out of the turn. Checked the reservoir and it was empty. Limped it to the auto parts store a mile away, refilled the reservoir and turned it on. Turned the wheel lock to lock and got a fairly loud whine from the front end. Turned it off, looked underneath and can see fluid coming off of the rack near the steering column connection. I've been searching the forum and see a lot of threads about replacing the rack and such, but didn't see a whole lot of discussion about diagnosis. Appreciate any feedback, could it be seals, hose or am I looking at replacing the whole rack? '99 with 182k miles. Thanks!

Looking at toyota part #4425060050 for $545 plus the outer tie rods for anther $120. Do those prices sound about right? The parts assembly I'm looking at online is a bit confusing. Link below:

Some of the individual components are more expensive than the whole assembly.

So, getting ready to do this. Can someone confirm that the rack part number here is correct?

Hey fellas. I'm new to the 100 series. Always wanting to learn.

What would be the cause for the power steering leak and rack failure?

Common issue?

Have you tried to verify it's not a hose? It would be sad for you if you spent all that money on a rack and had a leaking hose. Also, why replace the tie rods if they are not confirmed to be bad? I get people want to replace things as a preventative measure, but it seems excessive to me. Your money though.
