I am looking into upgrading the sound system in my '01 100 w factory NAV..I have already changed out all the speakers except the sub..What I am looking at is a JL Clean Sweep sound processor, 4-5 channel amp and a better sub. What I am concerned with is where have you, that have upgraded your stereo, put the amps, and what sub have you gone with. I am most concerned with space. I want to lose as little space behind the rear seats as possible. I want a really clean, hidden (if possible) installation. I'm not interested in huge subwoofer enclosures, etc..Has anyone gone the route I am talking about? As far as the factory sub location is concerned..Can something better (than stock) be put in the factory location ? I did a search but still wanted to get some more input in case I missed something..... :hmm:

I had the 3sixty underneath the passenger seat. And two amps in the back behind the right oem cargo panels. I took those out and removed the whole panel then had enough space to make a plywood board and screw the amps on. (facing outwards)

One disadvantage was that adjusting had to be done before mounting the amp behind the panels. Also you will offcourse loose the two compartments.

For me it was perfect cause I didn't want to have the amps visible.

Amp for speakers was an Audison 4.5
Speakers where all Hertz
Sub enclosure Hertz
JBL amp for the sub

Sounded frikkin awesome. I did dynamat the door though.

Hope this helped a little.

I think you'll have to make a decision whether you want good subwoofer sound/response or concealed installation location as I don't think you can have both given the small spaces available in the back of the LC. I built a subwoofer enclosure that sits atop my AO drawer fridge slide right in back of the fridge. I couldn't be happier.

Amps went under the PS seat one atop the other.

ive got JL Audio speakers in the doors driven by an alpine amp under the pass seat. My 10" W6 sub is in a small sealed box that sits in the cargo area and the amp is mounted on the floor next to it, taking up minimal space. I wanted to try and custom install it into the original area, but the guy would have had to fiberglass a whole new trim panel, too much work for what it was worth.

I wonder how much (if any) room there is on the inside of the lower tailgate? It would be a good place to mount the amp and cleansweep. I wonder though, if that area is sealed. I wouldn't want the electronic pieces to be subjected to moisture and/or dust. I think I will pull out the inside carpet piece on the lower tailgate and see what is in there....:hmm:

There isn't much room inside the lower tail gate. The license plate area/upper lid latch protrude into the available space. I thought about creating the cubby mod when I had to install new upper and lower lids but it didn't look like it was worth the time, effort and cost.

Although having said that there might just be enough space in there for a couple of small amps; but not the one's I have under my passenger seat.

doubt theres room for amps in there, best bet is to take out the factory sub and install them behind that panel.

Twstrchasr be careful taking that carpeting piece off, it is flimsy and will start to rip.

Thanks for the tip on the carpet, Loud...

Spressomon, the other problem I see, as opposed to your set-up is that the factory NAV reader is under the front pass seat on my rig. Not sure I can fit an amp or the cleansweep unit on top of it. Is there any room under the driver seat for anything? I'm taking my car in to the stereo shop next week to have them do a "dry run" to see exactly what and where we can put things. I kind of like to have some added info from some of you that have already faced some of these issues .

A bit of a hijack, but my whole system sucks! CD player is dead, no Ipod plug in and all the speakers and sub are trashed. How much do I need to spend for a decent system? I really don't want to spend $1-$2K. To many other mods I "need" first! Can I do something better than stock for $500, or is it just not worth it? I know a $500 system won't sound like a $2K system, but can it be done?

Sorry about that...mine being a '99 doesn't have the Nav reader, as you stated...and I'm not that familiar with the '00+ models in this respect. FYI: On '98 & '99 (maybe '00 too) the small factory amp is located under the passenger seat.

I do have some space under the DS seat.

Pint,
Often times its the lack of power that results in poor sound. Having said that I have not experimented with the factory speakers being driven by a little more power. But that would be where I would start if I was trying to keep it at or below $500.

Don't know if it helps you or not but I recently upgraded my Eclipse head unit...I still have my Eclipse unit (3-years old, works perfectly). PM me for details if interested.

Pint, if you do all the work yourself you can probably keep costs at a minimum, and of course pickup a used headunit to help keep the costs low. Decent build speakers and a new amp(not sure if it will drive the stock sub, mine didnt) and you could probably have a system at least under 1k, not sure about 500 tho...then again prices may be cheaper out there for parts.

when I replaced my broken factory 6cd head unit, I installed a cheaper jvc flat screen head unit, rewired the factory harness, and installed an amp and sub I had laying around. I have not replaced the other speakers yet but am not disappointed with the sound quality. So I would agree that with the right choices and doing the work yourself you could put together a decent sounding system.

Got the rig back after the stereo shop had it and the news is good...They can pull the factory sub out and fit a 5 channel Alpine amp and the Clean Sweep in its place. As far as subs go, there are many choices. Now all I have to decide is if I want to spend that kind of money on a rig I might be replacing in 4-6 months !!

well if your getting rid of the 100 in 4 months u will never get your moneys worth or your money back from the system

hey twchaser do you post the model that would fit there; this is a projecdt i want to do also but will wait for warmer weather. thnks also if anyone wants to recommend good sets of speakers which will fit into the doors that they have had good outcomes with i would appreciate it. I'm not that good with companies of sound systems or speakers. thanks

There is enough space in the tailgate as we were able to drop an Audison 5.1 LRX inside my tailgate replacing a JL 1000/1 amp.

the amp that is perfect fot the land cruisers is the alpine pdx-5 75x4 + 300x1.

its only 9x10x2 in size.. and fits easily under the seat.

I just installed an Elcipse EA3422 4 channel amp that fit perfectly under the passenger seat in my '98 and replaced all the door speakers with some Kenwood Excelon 3ohm something or others that fit perfectly in the stock baskets like that writeup on here. That teamed with the Eclipse AVN30D head unit it sounds fantastic. My next task is the subwoofers. I ran all the wires to the rear for the sub amp, and I'm going to attempt to install 2 MB Quart 8" subs into the rear space where the stock unit and cupholder are. Wish me luck, as it's going to be a rig job I'm thinking. Once I am far enough along I will post up some pics, and will follow with a writeup if it turns out good. I have to say, this has been one of the most difficult stereo installs I've ever done wiring wise.

abewley's right. I just had a alpine 5 channel pdx put in under the PS. It sounds great. I left the factory speakers in for now, just ran better cable to them. Also, put a sub in the back. I love it. Also, i ran the usb cable for my ipod from the deck to the lower centre console. I was going to leave it in the single din pocket, but putting it in the console was a much better idea.
