Here's the deal:

I've got an 06 and picked up an e-locked third and passenger side axle, slee control box and magic dial for a good price. I want to install it but it's from a 99' and the gear ratio is different than the 06. I think the 99' is 4.30 and the 06' is 4.10. I'm going to install it but here's the difficult part - should I get my current gears swapped into the locked third or should I wait to save cash and regear the whole damn truck with 4.88's? I plan on running 285/75/18's but don't have them yet either which is a cost.

The issue is that it cost quite a bit to pull the third and reinstall after swapping the gears and I really only want to do it once. But, new gears with a master rebuild kit is $1400 which adds to the cost then "since your in there" I'd want to add a locker ($1000) then labor.....I need tires, and armor too.

It just all adds up! What would you do?

Assuming you can't cheaply get a 00-02 front diff and swap it in to change your gears to 4.30, I'd wait and do the gear swap at the same time. 4.10 is a good ratio for 33 though
I honestly didn't think about that because I think the front claim shell would cost too much. It's a good idea. Anyone have one for cheap?

4.30 is better :). Puts you back close to stock.

But I think OP is wanting to run 35s which are a good fit for 4.88.

The PM about my front diff makes sense, but it's a 2 pinion diff so you wouldn't want it in there anyways since it would be a downgrade unless you locked the front with a Harrop or ARB.

My thought is that if you are looking to do this once, go ahead and start saving your pennies for a regear job to 4.88s. My only question is will the e-locked third fit in the non e-locker housing or do you have to shave some of the housing? Have you tried?

I had forgotten about the 2 pin and just had the conversation about it about a week ago. Your right, save the pennies or send the rig to you with 80 axles.

No I haven't tried and if it doesn't fit in going to be PO'd.

1) 4.88's are not as 'necessary' with the 5-sp as they are w/ the 4-sp
2) If it will take you 1.5+ yrs to save up to do the whole shebang, you'll have lost two summers of wheeling with a rear locker. If it's just a year away, then :meh:

Wasn't there a spline count difference between the 1998-2002 and the 2003 up axles? I don't necessarily think they are interchangeable IIRC but could be wrong.

I don't think the spline count changed throughout the 100 series years

Maybe not. But isn't one side shorter on the e-locker axle?

After some thought, I decided not to regear yet and sick with the 4.3. This meant no 35" tires (285/75/18) and instead I picked up some BFG ko2', 275/70/18s with a little less than 5k miles on them for $600. For me, this makes the most sense right now but it still doesn't solve the problem with what to do with the rear E-locked third member and passenger side axle, magic dial and see harness I have from an earlier 100 series.

Does anyone know if an E-locked third will fit in a 06' axle housing?
