The guy sounded like he'd come down in price due to not having the hard top and doors. Crusty Butt isn't that far...besides, the drive is beautiful.
 
I talked to the guy with the '77. It is the best candidate I've come across so far. He said that is was all original but that the engine probably needed a rebuild. I want to restore a stock 40, and this one still has all of the bits and pieces.

If I can get a deal going on this I might be taking a road trip to NM.

What are the indications that a rebuild is needed? The 2F is an indestructible beast of an engine and at 150K miles it's barely broken in, unless it was abused. If he thinks that's the case, use it as a bargaining chip. Good luck, it looks like a good one even at $2K.
 
He said that it made noise when running. IIRC he said it was a bottom end noise (not sure I know what that is though).
