Hi,
I just purchased a 1980 FJ40 and am looking for a local, trustworthy mechanic for some basic preventative maintenance. It's almost all stock and was thinking having someone close maybe if I wanted to do something big to it like replace the engine with a refurb one. Does anyone have any contacts in the Wilmington NC or Jacksonville NC area? Also would be great to meet some other LC owners in the area.

My dad just had an engine swap on his S-10 pick up by JT's Auto up close to Laney. But, I don't think they're Toyota experts... The club has done a few engine swaps in about a weekend with pizza and beer!

Probably worth your while to take it to Darin in Fayetteville. Full Disclosure, I don't know him other than as an aquaintence but I know several of his customers and they say he is a top notch mechanic.

I love the 79 and newer Fj40's have been looking to buy one for a while now!

One of my buddies that I grew up with had a dune beige 1980 that I used to drive all the time. Loved that truck. He sold it to pay for an expedition on Everest.

Theres a shop on Castle Hayne Road, he's a Toyota / Lexus guy and has worked on a few 40s and a lot of older Toyotas. Can't remember the exact shop name, it's in between 23rd and N. Kerr, left side of road if your going from 23rd towards Kerr.

Theres a guy out in Navassa who is an Ex-Toyota tech, owns his own shop now. Very cool laid back guy. Top Notch Automotive, Brian Drake. Not sure if he would want to mess with an older 40, but he knows a lot about Toyotas and I recommend him or at least asking him first. He's the guy I call.

Low Range 4x4 off River Road is primarily Jeep. However, they know their stuff and have done a lot of work on all types of Toyotas. They recently did a pretty involved Resto on a 40, I think its on their Facebook or website. They have my Taco in the back now. Nice guys.

And of course Fayetteville is not that far too.

Thanks for all the reply's. None of these guys are too close. Fayetteville may be too far for little things but a good solid backup just in case. I'll try and give Brian Drake a call and see what he says.
Here she is.

Hey Joe,

We have a place in Sandy Ridge in Surf City and I'm usually there three days a week. I'd love to check her out sometime.
