I friend of mine wants to buy his first camping trailer and I was hoping some folks on here with more knowledge than me might be able to offer some advice. He owns a brand new Honda Ridgeline to tow it with, has a budget max of $20k and is open to a used trailer. From the trailers that he has looked at, he likes the units that are the tear drop type with an external kitchen. All advice would be appreciated.

Bart,

Betsy and I have been looking at them alot! Watching a lot of You Tube Videos. We actually watched 3-4 last night. Playing with Sticks is a good series to watch as he give pros and cons and is not sponsored. We have also looked at DIY kits. My favorite is the TC trailer line. The Terrain is about my favorite. Bean also makes some really nice ones too. Less expensive are Hiker, they have a dealer in PA. Cedar Ridge has some nice ones too but $$$

Each has pros and cons. He should look at some and see how they work and how many people he wants to sleep. Heat/ac are also things to consider as well as the power systems, solar, batteries, water storage, fridge space. Slide outs, roof mounts. Awnings etc. Suspension is another. I prefer a drop start torsion axle. The independent suspension may ride a little better but requires alignments as they are not attached left to right.

Tongue storage boxes, racks, propane racks, bike/motorcycle racks, Is the fridge in the back with kitchen or in a box on the front of the trailer? Some have cool tables that attach to the outside to cook/prep on. some have the propane plumbed to the back from the tank and you just hook up. Others you have to take the tank off and bring it over to cooking area. some have water outside that can freeze in cold weather.

Frames... some have nerf bars to protect trailer, stand on fenders are nice to be able to access roof and rack. Does he want an additional roof top tent?

Most of these are in the 1500 lb range with some going up to 3k or even more. With his tow rig he should not be limited. Look on Market place, maybe look at some nearby. I have only seen one TC trailer in the last 6 months pop up and it is for sale now 7k. I have yet to see a Bean pop up.

Tell him to sit back watch some videos and take notes. I would get a "off road" version of whatever I got so it will have a little more ground clearance but would not drag it down the trails.

Sorry to be long winded but it is fun to see what people have done and how primitive and how hotelish some of these are.

like @matzell said there are TONS of different options out there but it really comes down to is type of use.
If all you are doing is driving to a camp ground when the roughest part of the trip is the gravel roads there then a person doesnt NEED to go wild.
How often is it going to be used is another BIG thing.
There are so many options out there that is is over whelming. I watched the prices go sky high during Covid but now watching the secondary market people are getting rid of them for alot less then paid for. Even now they are damn expensive for what they are. You can buy a nice used full size trailer for cheaper then some used small "teardrop" ones.
Again type of use and how often are the bigget factors in my opinion.
