As you may know, from our jobs thread, I have been working for Sony Ericsson (mobile phones) for the past 2 years since moving to NC. Yesterday, I found out that the company is laying off 350-450 people in RTP and I'm most likely one of them.

If anyone knows of any companies hiring mechanical engineers in the Raleigh-Durham area, please let me know. I've designed mechanical parts for mobile phones for the last 9 years, but I'm definitely flexible and interested in other industries.

Very sorry to hear this, Clint. :( I'll definitely keep my ears open for anything....................

I am sorry to hear that as well. It will be interesting to see where the economy goes. But this is a good time to branch out and try something new and put your talents to work.

Look outside the box and you will be surpised what you find. Look at the trends in the economy and start your own venture. I was never fond of working for other people.

I was worried about you when I saw the news last night Clint. I don't have any mechanical contacts, but if you see a posting @ cisco, lemme' know and I can give you an internal reference.

I really hate hearing these stories, its all very sad.

I know that Verizon has bought Alltel, Im not supposed to know, but they did. Maybe look for something with Verizon as they seem to be a stable and growing company. Good luck.

I'm about to be right there with you man. I moved up here 4.5 years ago to design houses for a builder. Say no more, right? Well, things look pretty bad. I kept hoping we had seen the end of it, but each month is a bit slower and we have more and more cuts. At this point, I really only have three choices: Change careers again, go back to school, or take pay cuts and hope to weather the storm. The latter may actually suck worse than being without. At least without, you don't feel like the walking dead around the office.

Clint - I've been meaning to check in on you...so is it official? I hate that if so.

Me + my compadres have some pretty good relationships with a fair amount of technical companies in town - let me start digging and see if something doesn't pop up.
Instantly I think of Optimal Technologies - they are relatively new, and have been on a hiring campaign, I know they have one mechanical guy...but might be open for another.

I'll touch base with them this week.

Thanks guys. It's now official. I got the call yesterday and turned in my badge.

I'm updating my resume and working with friends like y'all to find something new. Hopefully with the economy as it is, companies will still take a bit of risk hiring me with my ex-telecom experience.

Thanks for the leads so far and please let me know by post, pm, or email if you hear of anything or have ideas.

Think of the plus side. Now at least you have some time to relax minus that of the time spent finding a job.
