Hello everybody,

I am new in this forum and in the world of land cruiser.
I am going to make à trip all across america for one year.
I am looking to buy a Land Cruiser HJ60, automatic in good condition.
I need a diesel because i will do a lot of miles and there is some place where i will go in south america where there is no gaz station for many many mile, so i need a good autonomy.

I need a 4x4 very reliable who will be able to go almos everywhere.

Do you think the hj60 is a good choice ?
Did someone have one to sell or know where i can find one ?

If you guys could help me with that, i will apreciate a lot :)

I am located in Montreal, Quebec but i can do good distance for a good cruiser.

Have a nice day,

Matthieu

I would take a 5-speed over an automatic transmission, especially for a non-turbo diesel like the Canadian market HJ60s. Have you considered a BJ60 with the 4 cylinder diesel? If you are not looking to travel too fast, that may give you better fuel economy, and they are considered pretty much bullet-proof (although both the 3B and 2H engines are getting older).

Hi Rock doc,
Tank's for your answer.

Do you know what is the difference of fuel consumption between the hj60 and the bj60 ?
I know there is more manual land cruiser for sale but i realy prefer automatic. Is there a big difference ?
I was thinking to about the serie 80 but they seem to consume a lot of fuel. Is there some diesel ?
Do you know how the serie 60 is on the hight road ?
What do you think of the land rover discovery ? They seem to consume a lot of fuel and people say they are not very reliable.

Cheers,

Matthieu

A diesel cruiser is going to be pretty good on fuel, the BJ slightly better than the HJ, but I've never owned either. The diesels are rock solid and have lots of torque, but are not very fast. Takes a long time to get up to highway speed. All diesel cruisers sold in Canada were non-turbo, adding a turbo can get more pep out of them, and the 3B (BJ60) is supposed to be well suited to turboing. If you are interested in getting an diesel auto, I would look at the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market, right hand drive) vehicles that have been coming in through importers. An HJ61, or HDJ81 (both turbo 6 cyl diesel) will have lots of get-up with an auto. For a smaller truck, there is the BJ74 (turbo 4 cylinder). The JDM trucks generally draw a higher price, but have lower kms and are in much better shape rust wise.

As for how a 60 series is on the highway, I've had my FJ62 up to 150 km/h on the highway (the gasser-auto combo has long legs).... It rides nice up to say 130, then you start feeling uncomfortable knowing that the rest of the truck isn't built for that speed. Any 60 in good repair with a decent drivetrain is going to be a nice smooth riding truck on good roads. The 80 series trucks are going to be smother once you get into a bit rougher roads since they have a coil suspension rather than leaf springs.

Land Rover? Poor quality, electrical gremlins and low resale value are what I hear about them.

*edit* Since you are in Quebec, I guess you are out of luck on the JDM trucks, as I understand your government has put a halt on their sale.

You might spend some time in the diesel and 24v section to get a feel for the options, and maybe start a thread there to get input. If I were to go for a Canadian market diesel cruiser, I think it would be either a BJ42 or BJ60 with a 5-speed.

Hi RockDoc,
Wow, tanks for all your advice, it help me a lot.
Yes, i live in Quebec and we cannot have right and drive anymore.
I will try to fing a BJ60, HJ60 or maybe a serie 70 wagon. I think the BJ42 is to small because i want to sleep in it.
And i am very most familiar with automatic transmission, do you think it could be ok or not ? Did the automatic transmission will do the job in the mountains ?

What do you thing of the Land Cruiser Prado ?

Tank's again,

Have a nice day,

Cheers,

bonjour Mathiew! yeah +1 on the bj or hj60s, i know they are very hard to come by in quebec but in ontario there's a few that pop up form time to time and they really vary in price from 3 to 15G's! check out kijii and craiglists, they're there. if you PM me with your email i know of a local club member who's selling a clean bj60, i think it's 5spd tho.
cheers..

btw, stay away from the Prado, bad bad news (and they are JDM righ hand drive anyway)... weak 2.4LT motors that are notorious for blowing heads, you can research it, but take my word, stay away!

really dumb rule Quebec just passed, sorry to hear, i hopt it doesn't happen in ontario! so a mid wheelbase bj74 if out of the question too (unless you find a Left hand drive one).

btw, have you seen the quebec landcruiser section? hit the clubhouse tab on the top right of this page and scroll down.

Hi Romey, bonjour ;)
Tank's for your advices, it's realy cool to have thoses because a week ago i was knowing nothing about land cruiser.

I will eliminate the prado and keep the hj or bj60 and maybe the fj74 if i can find a left hand drive.
I will look on kijiji and craiglist and i will go the the quebec clubhouse to.
I am sending you my email adress.

What do you think of a automatic transmission ? I am realy more familiar with it.

Tank's again guy's,

have a nice day,

Matthieu
