I'/ve found an HJ47 close enough to me to buy. I posted this in another board here, but got no replies and have since found the right place for it. It's an 81 HJ47 pick up with Ute bed, RHD, 2H Diesel with 67,000 km (likely 167K km, but still low). Imported from Aus to SA, then to US. Guy has had it 5 years, only some surface rust, big Roo bar on front. It's in NC. He'd take $10,000, but maybe a bit less.

On the other hand, I found a very local 70 FJ40 in nice shape, new brakes and wiring harness, small lift a new TSL swampers. for $6500

Tell me why I should get the HJ47 instead. It's stunning, but not quite a useable or practical for me, but hard to pass up.

i had a rhd hj47... I had an early 40 in good shape. Loved them both. It just depends on what you're going for. DD? Wheeling?

More likely 267K or higher, 167 is stupidly low.

Intended use would be DD for a few weeks while my 974Runner gets a new JDM engine . Then I figure I'd put the HJ back to limited use around town.

I guess the thing that I keep asking myself is can the HJ be dependable enough for daily use, which amounts to 50 mile a day round trip commute, mostly in town driving, with occasional highway use.

The owner said it had 3.76 gearing and that it could do 70, but that it was pushing it.

Next question is could it really hit 29mpg, or even 25mpg regularly? I looked at a thread here about diesel fuel mileage and most listed 18-22, but some of these were heavily modded rigs. I'd likely leave the HJ as it is, maybe a mild lift and mud tires, loose the Aussie bumper and that's about it.

Another Q- I know the top CAN come off, but how similar is is removal to an FJ40 hardtop?

My 1967 fj40 got 15 mpgs from its f and 3 speed. My 81 hj47 got 19-20 mpgs from its 2h with h41.

I completely agree with David. The 2H is a strong engine but it is neither efficient nor powerful. The 2F has moer power and only marginally worse fuel economy. I put a turbo on my 2H and still only got about 20MPG with 3:37 gears and a 5 speed. I pulled it out and put a Vortec in and my Vortec gets similar fuel economy with MUCh more power.

I have a troopy in Oz with the 2F and it is far more steetable than the last 2H troopy I had.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Josh

Since nobody answered the last question yet; the fiberglass top is removed by a series of screws around three sides. None in front. Those above the door require the removal of a small panel for access. There are about 20 that make up the sum of the connection points. I can get mine off now in about 20 minutes. The first time took over an hour.

Since the weather is nice, I now have the hard top removed with a bikini (from SOR) in place. It won't keep out all of the rain, but it keeps off the sun.

must be same hj47

I just made arrangements to buy the HJ47. having it shipped from NC to California, then to me in Hawaii... did you ever go see the truck? I am buying it sight unseen, from photos, etc.
curious about the mileage too, as per the mpg and the accuracy of the odometer. going to do more investigation when it arrives...
