I am looking at a '02 LX470 with 95K miles that appears to me to have excessive rust. Photos are here: Dropbox - Lexus

Also, the used car dealer removed the air suspension because it was bad and installed new springs.

I am buying this for a potential Pan-America trip in a few years. I don't need a daily driver. Please take a look at the photos and let me know if you think the rust is excessive. The price is in the $14K range.

Thanks a lot!

Whoa, dude. Run. Fast.

That looks scary bad to me. No way would I consider buying it.

Yeah, that's not "just some surface rust" as some dealers are fond of saying. That's pretty extensive corrosion. If you're a little patient you'll find one with low miles in good shape for that price or only slightly more.

Now for a viewpoint of someone not from the rust free south. For a daily driver this is not any issue at all and that truck will keep going down the road for many many years. That looks pretty typical for a northern truck. My 1998 was a lot worse than that when I drove it on its last trip to central america a couple of years ago. As long as everything is solid there is no functional issue.

The one thing to think about is whether or not you plan to break stuff on the trip (due to some extreme wheeling rather than just driving bad roads and off road). If so, you will need a torch, spare nuts and bolts of the correct size and rating, etc, and a breaker bar in your tool kit.

Many of the trucks used offroad on a daily basis down in Central America look much the same given the corrosive mud they drive through. They will know how to get nuts off, but they may not have the right replacements.

Though this is solid info, you have options and for that price, there is no chance you should buy that truck. There are tons out there for less with nowhere near that amount of rust. Just my 2c

Looks like typical upstate NY. Surprised theyput it on their lot. Remember the frames rot from inside as well especially by where rear trailing arms are attached. Nightmare!
