I will research. I don't know the details on any of the shafts yet.

I saw your for sale post about the 60 axle housing as well. Is that the same as the 62? Looks like I have more research.

and the auto-matic driveshafts are not the same length...

p.s. why would the 60/62 axles be different?(they are the same..other than the autos came with 4:11's and the 60's came with 3:70's)

62 front axles have that extra gusset that all the cool guys want, and the rear FJ62 axles have the sway bar mounts welded on.


Brian-Are you talking FJ62 driveshafts or inner axle shafts? The inner axle shafts are exactly the same as FJ60.

FJ62 driveshafts are unique as Dave said.

Thanks for clearing that up Dave.I assumed Randy was looking for AXLE shafts, not driveshafts. Maybe that wasn't a safe assumption. You read the same ad and ASSUMED he was looking for DRIVEshafts.

Maybe Randy will enlighten us both.

Sorry for the open ended question. I'm looking for spare axle shafts. I believe they are called birfields? And since the pumpkin (differentials) are offset that means carrying more than 1 spare.

I'm not sure how I feel about carrying spare driveshafts. Might as well bring the kitchen sink as well then...

I know that Seth's 60 broke the rear shaft last trip to coyote. I did notice that after going to red lake I had scratches on my rear driveshaft. I guess I got out lucky on that one. No vibrations at speed so I think I'm ok.

What about inner shafts? Do those see a lot of breakage with lockers and 35's? Should I be carrying spare inner shafts as well as Birfields?

I'd like to be prepared when wheeling but there is a point where you're carrying too much.

A rear driveshaft is a good spare to carry!

You can carry the front inners, but only 1 birfield. I've broken a rear axle shaft-definitely a good spare to have.

Understand, that there are great aftermarket parts available that are much stronger than stock.

ok.... so maybe I'm the one who shouldnt assume anything..
I ASSUMED that after hearing about Seths rear driveshaft.. he might wanna carry one.(I do suggest that he does).
anyways ... enough for me... I gotta go fix some thing.

Maybe after I do SOA I will go with a stronger rear driveshaft one and carry my original as a spare. If Seth can break one then i guess the weight is worth the insurance. Still not sure which route to go on the front driveshaft. I've been researching a lot and I'm going to do the cut and turn to be safe.

The $650 for Longfields is expensive. I'd rather stick with birfields until I break one. If breaking them is easy them I'd upgrade, but until I deem it neccesary I see that $650 being better spent elsewhere.
