I am going to plan a road trip down to Baja for a little fishing and R&R. I don't know if it will happen next year but the following year is highly probable. My goal will be awsome beaches, good fishing, no crowds and off road as much as possible. I have done two week trips but find that three week trips are much more relaxed.

Anyone interested?

Dependant upon curent employment I'd be interested.

I would definatly be interested. Unlike some people who don't have "real" jobs ( :p ) I'm not sure I can do a 3 week trip. But once you get the time frame, cost, etc, figured out, let us know.

I'm with Gabe, might be able to knock out a week or so and then head back. Don't know how that would work in the planning.

First time I went down to Mexico wasn't very far over the border on the baja side. It was a 3 day trip (each direction), and one of the nights we drove all night (though that was to buy more time so we could go to Six Flags..... :D ).

If we wanted to go down to somewhere like Puerto Vallerta, it's more like a 6 day trip (each way).

To really enjoy yourself you need a minimum of at least as long as it takes you to drive (at least in my opinion). Blocking out two full weeks (10 days of vacation time) would work fairly well, but that's a lot of vacation to burn for most folks.

We might be able to leverage a holiday weekend (here at Harry and David we get 2 to 3 days off around the 4th of July to make up for lack of time off at Christmas), but then you're dealing with everyone else who is doing the same.

Just bring your Laptop and celly you can work while poundin' the Tequila.

From So Oregon you are looking at two very full days of driving to get anywhere I would want to go. So Mag bay is about it by day two. I would love to get just below LaPaz before settling in. I am figuring @ three days of driving. I want to get to LaPaz because that is where the fishing gets really good.

May/June is the best balance of tempratures and fishing in that region. It is warm enough that a beach camp is comfortable. But not so warm that AC is needed for the:princess:.

A two week trip can be done if you are willing to do some hard core driving. Obviously with my children that is not an option. If you really drive hard you can make it to Mullaje in two days. That is kind of where I consider the vacation to begin. There are destinations further North that are fun and have great 4x trails to get into. (or at least used to?) But the fishing up North is not as consistant.

One of my absolute rules of driving in Baja is never drive at night South of Ensenada. I have done it twice and hit one cow and very nearly missed another. They come out of the desert at night to lay on the warm pavement. Black cow + black top + a black night = bad juju! In Mexico you are responsible for the cow you kill.

Trip planning is not difficult for a Baja trip. The key is knowing where you are going to fuel up. In dozens of trips down there I have never had any negative encounters with locals or policia. They have always been very kind and quite generous. I love it down there.

Both times I've been down there the locals have been incredible. (Well, except for maybe Tijuana, but that's a different story.)

Even when I had no clue as to what they're saying (high school Spanish 10 years ago is about useless) and they had no clue what I'm saying (some smaller villages still don't know much/any English) you can still communicate. Last time I was down there a bunch of us headed into town and rounded up some locals for a Mexico VS US basketball showdown. It was great fun, especially since any time anyone made a shot they'd throw their hands up in the air and scream the only English words they knew: "Michael Jordan!"

I was blown away at how content the locals were living in concrete sided, plywood roofed 1-3 room "houses" (which were maybe 20' x 20' square at the largest). I wish I could be half that content with half of what I have. :hhmm:

The :princess: has never been down there. I'd love to go again, especially with someone who knew what they were doing.

Didn't he say fishing?? I thought he only fly rodded? : )

I'd try my best to do something like that. With enough notice (probably like 8 months) I could probably get 2 weeks at least.

You know.... Canada is closer...... :D

This does sound like fun, although I have no idea what I'll be doing in 2 years......

Wouldn't it be more fitting for El Presidante to be seen in his home country : )

Although, I've always enjoyed plowing through fresh snow . . . I don't think Steve will be as happy with the fishsicling : (

Actually, driving up the AlCan hwy would be quite the adventure! Could be a cool trip too. I just love Mexico and the idea of doing nothing on a beach for a couple of weeks is very appealing to me.

I would definitely be on for a trip north as long as it includes Salmon, Carriboo and Moose!

Just as long as we don't have to listen to your kid doing his calls. Once was enough! I still think I have have hearing loss.

Definately Canadia is .... well ... less corupt than Mehico...

LOL that's why I manage a bank...no spelling required with numbers.

LoL, I have a spell checker : )
I've found, at least with computers and code numbers can be less forgiving and a lot harder to find : ( I don't envy your number responsibilities : )

Sounds like fun, but We'd have to go only as far as Vicente Guerrero, as that's where my parents are. They'd kill me if I made that kind of trip and didn't spend a significant amount of time with them. They faciliate short-term missions work camps for an organization called Welcome Home Outreach.
