Chicago, how would these differ from a limited slip? are they mechanical vs. viscous?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Limited slips are different. Auto lockers are mechanical and dont run on clutches, they mechically LOCK the two axles together when power is applied or going in a straight line, giving you two tires that spin at the same speed no matter what. But they open when turning a corner. This is what gives them the pop-boom-bang some people complain about. Or like Lockrights and other "lunch box" lockers you get a definet ratcheting noise.
Limited slips usually use clutches to LIMIT the tendancy for wheels to slip and yet be unnoticble during normal driving. But they are limited slips, so in rocks they sometimes will still allow a tire to slip.

Yeup,
What stinky said...
To be honest, I knew that limited slips were different, but I wasnt sure HOW they were different.:o
Ive been doing some research on lockers, so I have gained a bit of knowledge that I was able to impart ,insted of being the one ALWAYS asking the questions. It felt good to contribute for a change:D
I have really learned a s*** LOAD by reading posts and asking questions here on this board.

Thanks for all the good info - I completely forgot about howstuffworks - I was looking in wikipedia and some other 4x4 sites.

Much obliged. And Chicago - it's like waiting at a movie - I showed up, so at least you know you're not at the end of the line anymore;)
