Hey all,

Like the title says I’m locked out of my new to me 2003 gx470. The key fob still has a red light but I think the battery is going out. Easy, just unlock manually, right? No…nothing happens when I put my key in the door and turn it. I’ve tried holding it, turning both ways, nothing…

Until this point, aside from delays due to the dying battery, the car has no other issues unlocking. The PO must have either lost the original key or just forgot to give it to me cause this one is a Toyota logo fob.

I have batteries the way for the fob, but aside from this, why wouldn’t the manual unlock work? Is there an actuator specific to the manual lock that would go bad? Seems wrong. Is there a mechanical connection that isn’t working, maybe disconnected?

Thanks in advance

I was curious if it was that simple or if there’s some electrical ordeal with a programmed key etc. need to pull the door panel and see what’s going on. There’s no resistance (as if the lock were jammed) when turning the key.

Key fob is kind of working again. Took it apart and added a little back pressure to the battery, I don’t think it was a solid connection. New batteries just came in so I’ll try that too

I don’t believe the batteries on the key fob impact the manual opening of the door with key 🔑

The key by itself (no chip required) should open the door. However, the actuator has to be working and the key has to match

That’s what I was hoping to hear, and makes the most sense to me. It seemed like a bad “emergency” backup if the manual lock requires a battery/chip in the fob. I haven’t owned a fancy truck before though…

I’ll pull the door panel when I can get to it and see what I find. Hopefully it’s obvious.
