Have you heard of Local motors? We are discussing in class and I wanted to see what your thoughts were.

They actually 3d printed a car.

I watched a video that stated they are looking to put microfactories all over.

All content is shared and lots of the lab / factory time is free.

They will even sell your product.

This will not replace major automotive manufacturers but will be incerdieble for motor heads everywhere.

I did not read into it a whole lot but I am assuming some sort of franchise deal of some sort. Gonna take a big chunk of $ to get involved I am sure.

The world of open source comes to automotive manufacturing - very welcome indeed!

@NCFJ they are not a MLM scheme or anything like that - the idea is anyone can design a car, get input from the community, then ultimately "build" it in one of the microfactories / at home. It's an awesome concept, sadly I don't know it'll ever gain traction or be anything more than a microscopic niche. Still, for those with the means (design, fab, assembly, money), it's really frickin' cool.

They are trying to think bigger. They want to bring the number of components down to 50 for a car versus 25,000.
They want to disrupt the entire supply chain.
Very interesting concept indeed.
The videos were required course work and are eye openers.

Local Motors has been around for a while now IIRC. Their first car was the "Rallyfighter". It's been in a few movies. Very impressive.

I think what they are saying is that localmotors will disrupt how things are done forever in the supply chain. Similar to uber and redfin.

I think a good example would be shipping ARB's across the ocean. We design and build in these micro factories for 25% off or something like that. Or any other heavy parts.
