Skeena/Nass Safari

Those of you who are looking for an adventure and a chance to see some cool country.

2 weeks from now I am heading for Terrace for a week of river fishing. Targeting Chinook but large Steelhead are common (Steelhead must be released unharmed). Pinks and Sockeye are fly fished at the campground in Terrace for those of you hardcore flyfishers.

I try and head up every year and there is a pretty good group going this year.
Like wheeling as far as I am concerned "the more the merrier"

I think it would be cool to have a squadron of LCs heading through the Nass valley.

River fishing for salmon is such a rush!! I totallly miss it. Used to fish the chehailis and Vedder all the time. Would be nice to go to a spot where there wasnt 1 million people:cheers:

I was skunked again at Dry Lake on the weekend but only fished for maybe 30 minutes with my son. The previous weekend he hooked a 3 pounder off the Dry Lake Camp warf. Most of this weekend he wasn't interested in fishing because some old friends were around. Monday night we borrowed a boat. I didn't even have my fly rod with me, so we both were dragging a worm and power bait off a bobber near the shore. I saw a big fish cruise by and John got a hit but missed it. I rowed the boat aound in a big circle thinking the fish might cruise on back. Sure enough it cruised past the boat and bang he had another big fish on. Only one problem, we forgot the net. All we had was a 5 gal bucket. I managed to get the fish into the bucket after he had played him out. I almost tipped the boat getting the fish and a bucket of water into the boat. Dressed, the fish weighed in at 2.75 lbs. I figure he must of been between 3.25 and 3.5 lbs with all the guts. My next step will be to get my son hooked on fly fishing. The lake had been worked pretty hard both weekend with no fish taken on fly or gang troll. One old guy was really pressing John for his secret. He wasn't too pleased to find out it was only a worm and bobber with some power bait that was working - exclaiming he had over $6000 invested in his boat and tackle and no fish to show for it. His wife got a good laugh. John is now on notice, one more big fish and he will be banned from Dry lake Camp. :D

Any of you guys ever fish Pinnask lake.
We spend a week there every year it is a nice spot has lots of trout that are easy to catch no big ones average size 12-14 inchers.
The road in is only 4 kms but takes 45 minutes to travel can be challenging for the novice wheeler even though the road is a rough one I have witnessed guys hauling RV trailers into there, but mostly day fisherman showup with car topper boats.

I have. Same results.
Have you tried it's neighbour Hathewm (sp).
Bigger fish and you have to release them.

Here is a little known tidbit/factiod about Pennask lake, that I learned from a hatchery dude in Clearwater.

It has the largest natural run of Rainbow trout in the world. They are not genitically the largest, but they have the largest gene pool and that is why many of the fish reared for stocking our lakes are related to the Pennask rainbow.

Yep and for their smaller size they fight just as good as some of the bigger trout in other lakes.
Never fished Hathume but keep trying the one just before it can't remember its name has larger size trout in it just haven't had much luck hooking them the lake can get really windy at times one day I was on it I watched a huge water spout develope at the end where the launch is...that was something else wished I could of got a picture it was 10' across and spiralled up about 60' high.

Okay that was cool a car topper and a roof all in one.
I am looking for a 8' Jon boat which would make a even better roof on the wifes BJ44

Thanks...

I fairly pleased with ease of loading. I do however get some weird cyclone effect with the air movement underneath the boat. I'll try to tackle that issue on next "improvement" day. Post some pics once you get yours on.
