Hey Guys,

just wondering if anyone has done one of these conversion had any tips?

I think this is a desirable swap, and is done somewhat regularly by folks in New Zealand. Might be worth asking on those forum's if you don't get much response here: http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewforum.php?f=22 Just do a search '5L' and a lot of stuff comes up on their forum.

My understanding though is that it's hard/expensive to get a 5L. 3L is a lot easier to get. Are you planning on turboing the 5L? The CT20 from the 2LTE doesn't move enough air for a 5L, so you'll have to come up with a custom setup.

I have the 5L sitting in the garage now there everywhere in Australia and planning of using the CT20 off my 2lt(roller rocker) why wouldnt it move enough air?

There are two versions of the CT20. The early one from the 2LT (roller rocker) and the 22RET is a really limited turbo. It's just an old design, and can barely keep up with a 2.4litre engine running low boost. There is no way it could keep up with a 3.0litre displacement engine (5l).

The second version of the CT20 has an 'A' on the compressor housing, and is a more modern turbo. It is on the 2LTII and the 2LTE. It's actually a pretty decent turbo. Some folks run 16-17lbs into their 2.4litre engines with it. My understanding is that this turbo starts to run out of puff on a 2.8litre engine (like the 3l), and is totally not suited to a 3.0litre engine (like the 5l).

There are a number of guys in New Zealand who have turboed 5L engines, and have discussed this to no end. They have discovered which turbos work the best. I'd recommend you have a look on those forums and find those threads.

Where are you located?

Have you searched the link I gave you in the second post? Really, you'll find all the info you need there.

Theres no such thing as a CT28 from Toyota. And a T28 from Garrett is too big and is most certainly not bolt on.

You could look for used turbos from the mercedes 3.0l turbo diesel CRD engines. GT2056 comes to mind. You'd need to build a custom manifold (weld steam pipe). Or possibly an adapter to the 2lte manifold.

Youre going to be looking for a turbo that has ar numbers of .40-.50 on the turbine and compressor sides.
I run a T3 with .42 turbine and .48 compressor on a 3.4L. So I would think something similar would be suitable. My turbo is a godspeed T3 off ebay. I abuse the hell out of mine and its holding up with 20 000 kms on it.
There are lots of variations of the same turbo model. You just have to pay attention to the ar numbers.

I'm in Adelaide just going to see how the ct20 go's on 8-9psi a lot of guy on the Aussie forums seem to be using them on the 5l motors my 2lt has 62kw and the 5l has 72kw non turbo so it's going to be a upgrade no matter what

Well just make sure you run a pyro and boost guage to see whats happening with boost and fuel settings. You could probably fit a boost compensator off the 2lt or 2ltII pump onto the 5L pump. pretty straightforward mod as I ve heard but never done it.

Believe I meant the Ct26 turbo.
