Hi all,

This may be a newb question but how do I separate the rotor from the hub. As you can see in the first pic there are rivets instead of bolts. The FSM doesnt show HOW to separate them but the exploded diagram does show them separate. Ultimately I would like to get the rotors turned, can the machinist turn this whole assembly or do they have to get separated?

Much thanks

Lee

You'll need to drive the 6 studs out. Use a brass drift or pound on a wood block, so you won't damage them.
Look in the FAQ for the 40 or 60 series for a good step by step with tool list and pictures.

I highly recommend you use a shop press to get everything apart. I used a 10ton press we have here at work, and it could barely do the job. A 20 ton would be better. Just drop them off at a machine shop if you don't have a press. I also recommend you consider just putting some new rotors on there, as you will not want to have to take all that apart again any time soon. Also put in new wheel studs. I got my rotors at Napa (premium rotors) and a year later they are in good shape still. I got my studs at Lordco. I can dig up part numbers if you like. A front axle job is a bit of a can of worms...haha. You'll want new brake pads too. And check your caliper condition while you're at it. I ended up rebuilding mine.

LJ78 Front Rotor / Wheel Studs / Brake Caliper / Brake Pad Kit Part Numbers

Hi Nick

Thanks for the advice.
If you have NAPA / LORDCO part numbers for any of the following that would be awesome. You should see their faces whenever I go in and ask for availability of any of the LJ78 parts, they have no clue, even Toyota cant cross reference.

Front Rotor:
Front Wheel studs:
Front Brake Calipers (plus vibration springs?):
Front Brake Pads:

Thanks Nick for all your help:)

as above for getting the studs out, if you end up having to be a bush mechanic wind the wheel nuts back onto the studs until they are flush with the end of the studs and give them a nice square smack with a heavy hammer and they pop out and as above new rotors usually aren't very expensive so easier and better to just replace them than get them machined if you can source them where you are :)

NAPA:
Front Rotor: Line: NDR Part #: 48-85799
(Rear Rotor: Line: NDR Part #: 48-86929)

Lordco:
Front Wheel studs: Line: 964 Part #: 27729-B
(Rear Wheel studs: Line: 964 Part #: 27520-B)

Front Brake Calipers (plus vibration springs?): I rebuilt mine myself with parts from Rock Auto, so don't have the caliper part numbers. I believe they are the same as the 1990 V6 4-Runner ones though.
Front Brake Pads: Again, same as the 1990 V6 4-Runner I believe. I highly recommend PBR Metal Master which were recommended to me by RADD. They are really good.

Hey all

I was able to pound out the wheel studs with a bras drift and hammer but forgot to make match marks, doh!

No money for new rotors and must get truck back together. What can happen if the old rotor gets put on without match marks? Rotors have about 50k Kms on them.

Thanks for the help!

Lee

match marks for what? it wont matter if the rotor isnt in the same orientation in relation to the hub... if thats what youre wondering...

If you have a drill and a wire wheel you can clean up the rotor fairly well. Just dont try to grind it down or remove material. just clean it up. You can also take some sand paper to the pad material and remove any glazing. again not too much. just kinda skiff it off. It'll get you by till you can get rotors and pads.
