Has anyone been here if so what was it like?

I guess is it more Sunday stroll than full on skinny pedal riding? Looking for somewhere to get the kids out into the woods without having to worry about making it home. Oh yeah and is free.

I have not spent any time up there in ca. 10 years so things may have changed.

Here's a link to the NPS map

Park Map Viewer

South of AL 35 is where the real canyon is and the roads along the rim are paved with pull-offs mainly for viewing the scenery. You'll notice that above AL 35 the map has no roads shown. This area falls under the Little River WMA. Another link:

This is where you want to go. You can access the roads N of AL 35 from a couple of directions and this will give you access to a couple or three places on the river, which should be shallow. The roads should be easy stuff, and essentially sandy because Little River is flowing off the plateau of Sand Mountain. Some spots may be rutted but shouldn't give you any problem.

You can access the canyon in at least a couple of places but if your kids are young they may not like the hike out. Then there's an easy to access spot at the lower end of the canyon but I bet it will be crowded.

Should be good for the kids but the yahoo factor may be high on a Sunday afternoon.

Thanks I guess I'll have to take a trip up there.

Its a great trip, wife and I did it with no kids and rented a cabin at DeSoto state park for an overnighter. Make sure you go to all the waterfalls in the area, you will love it.

Rented a cabin in Mentone last September and had a great time. For the weekend we went to Noccalula Falls on the way up:

Then we hiked in Little River Canyon:

Little River Canyon National Preserve (U.S. National Park Service)

We also hiked in Desoto State Park which has one trail with caves over hanging the canyon, it's own big waterfall, and massive rocks:

Alabama State Parks

Last we went to Sequoyah Caverns-it was not crowded at all:

Makes a nice weekend getaway for a 3 day weekend.
