thank you. we do too and every little thing that we get working properly makes it even more special

Was getting tired of the carb problems with Annie...needing half choke all the time, backfiring, stalling. Almost un-driveable. So, today, took the carb apart. Took the spare carb body, the one with the big-hole jet and plunger rod, put that carb body under Annie's air horn and on top of Annies carb base. Put it back on. What a difference! Needs no choke, will idle down to 300 RPM if I want it to. Smooth and quiet. Like a new LandCruiser.

Good work. Were both carbs the same vintage? Did either of yours have spare jet/plungers inside it? I gave my spare to IDave, I guess I need to look and see what size jet and plunger are in mine as I've had the same issue since I put this carb on.

I don't know. We got the second carb from the classifieds. We just needed the float. Second carb came with the metering rod and had a fuel cut-off solenoid. Annie's carb had just the small-hole jet and no solenoid. Both are the small window D-40, but I hear they were made for many years. Spare jet and rod came in the rebuild kit. Couldn't use the solenoid with the hand-throttle linkage, so I just filled that hole with JB weld...

So, we've been driving Annie to AND from work for the past two (2) days, planning on another commute tomorrow. I think 3 (THREE) days in a row elevates her to a daily driver status. New FrankenCarb seems to be working fairly well, still the tiniest bit of hesitation occasionally while accelerating if I slow my foot down too much. Been fiddling with the idle mixture and octane adjuster. Holds a steady speed beautifully, got the speedo to show 80 MPH on a downhill section of freeway. Idles so smoothly and quietly we sometimes wonder if she's still running. Had gotten into the habit of revving and slipping the clutch to start from a dead stop, learned today that we can just let the clutch out and then give her the gas. Could probably wheel her off-road now. Love driving her in traffic, using hand turn signals more often than not, making sure everyone sees me shifting the 3 on the tree...getting used to down-shifting through turns.
Still amazes me that you can find a 50 year old LandCruiser, that's sat for 10 years plus, and resurrect to a DD in less than 6 months.

That's about how long mine's been neglected...want to do another?

Have tools, will travel...

went over to treeroots today and we took the old gals out for a spin down to the park, then we wheeled the compost heap. root and i switched rigs for a bit, so i even got to drive a 25 ;)

Nice job.

I have a big window carb (missing glass) you're welcome to have if you want to experiment more with the carbs. Although it sounds like you found a wining combo with your current set up.

Def interested. Big window is what she should have. Let me know what you want for it:cheers:

Def interested. Pighead likes nothing more than experimenting with carbs. Assume the big-window carb has the big-hole jet and metering rod? Annie's carb still likes about 1/16th" of choke....thinking of turning down the thickness of a spare metering rod. Sorta like turning down the similar rods on an SU carb. In any event, Annie needs an original type Big-Window, just to be a bit sexier. If that is possible.

and got said "let there be light"

and there was.

shrouds removed, leds installed, light switch correctly wired, dimmer switch cleaned up and working, and knobs "restofurbed" ;)

Paint work...

There were a couple of nasty paint runs from Annie's PO repaint. Completely unacceptable for us purists. So, I got some 1200 wet-dry sandpaper and took them out. The long run, along the hood is still barely visible, might need another session.

Bumper work...

And, as sometimes usual with 40s, Annie's front bumper was bent in at the ends. So we pulled it off, pounded the heck out of it and made it pretty darn straight again. Re-mounted the license plate farther to the end, and bolted it back on. Still needs some finish work, but looks a lot better.

...earlier pic of bent bumper for comparison.
