Actually, the BF Vise was the most-used tool...

not much to report. the bumper is at the sandblasters (along with the roof for my 45), i finally sprayed the first coat of rust bullet on the soon to be roading wheels and began sanding the steering wheel that i epoxied a month or so ago.....

got the first layer of black on the split rims today, also decided to tear into the knuckles today since i was off work. had a lot of other stuff to do, so i only got one side torn down late this afternoon.

parts painted and drying now. i know, a little overkill, but hey, overkill is what makes cruisers so awesome

few things make me think someone has been into this knuckle before. first, the upper trunnion race was beautiful, but the lower had mild marks (usually the other way around). second, there is what appears to be marks from a bearing spinning on the spindle, but it's in between where the bearings are. last, looks like someone machined the lower cap.

maybe this is normal on early rigs, i don't know. also, is the steering stop bolt a normal bolt on the early models? cause it is on annie. we'll see if the passenger side is the same later on. do need to get an inner bearing and race as it's starting to show wear.

was thinking today...has anyone ever checked to see if the spindle bushing is the same as the axle bushing? the shaft diameter is correct, is the od and depth? they look awfully close to the same

got annie's straightened bumper back from the blaster, so working on painting it with rust bullet, but 98 degrees and hot sun don't make the rust bullet want to spray for long. also got one knuckle buttoned up and the other apart, soaked and scrubbed clean, so when they dry, i can rattle can some stuff and get that side buttoned up too. while running my fingers through the nasty tank, i found two shims for the upper side of the side i just buttoned up. never even saw them on the knuckle. thought it was odd that there was only one thin shim. hopefully, i can get it apart and the shims replaced without any issued on the trunnion bearing :frown:

bumper has two coats of rustbullet automotive, looks pretty dang good. need to fine wetsand it still. also still working on cleaning up little items. the trailer plug mount was bent up (as was the plug door), so a lot of banging/prying etc to straighten everything, then some welding, prime and paint.

what it looked like when we got her
bracket pounded out and welded
and finally painted

i don't know what the white paint under the black was made of, but it was kryptonite to the sand blaster at work, so i had to use a harsh grit roloc pad to get it cleaned, but looking much better. still have to get the flange which i can't get with the rolocs, so back to the blaster. (that will also help get the last bits of rust off the terminals). the lid and ring were lucky enough to get the rustbullet black coating when i was doing the rims the other day

after i painted her front bumper, i was cleaning the paint gun and dropped a metal scrub brush in the mixture. rust bullet says you have to do two coats because it gasses off when it's sealing off the rust, i wonder if that's what's happening in this rather mesmerizing video ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvPlWO-2kv0&feature=youtu.be

little projects today. more sanding and some painting of the wheel to see low spots. i'm not looking for show quality, but i'd like a nice wheel. found a few to re-epoxy

another project was the old school dualmatic trick of free=green, locked=red

working on the name in the bezel...what a PITA

also got a new column dustboot on. yeah, it doesn't do much, but it was yucky

Very timely. I have the same dust shield to put on mine and some "Spanish Maroon" paint (not sure if I have enough though) for my bezel as well.

So . . . how are you applying the paint into the "Land Cruiser" stamp? Just a small brush, very carefully, one layer at a time? Did you tape around the edges of the letters first?

And how did you get your dust shield on? Did you separate the column from the steering gear and then slide the shield up the column to screw it to the engine side of the firewall, or did you slide the shield down the column with the steering wheel removed and screw it to the inside of the firewall?

Thank you chronicling your work in this thread. I've enjoyed it. And thank you in advance for any reply. Best.

i cheated on the boot and sliced the top so i could just slip it on from underneath. one word of advice, don't cut the complete center open. i found it's much larger than necessary. i would cut a small hole and just flay it if necessary

i'm using a small brush painfully slowly and bad with my unsteady hands (doesn't help with the bezel on the rig).

tonight, i finished up the trailer plug (outside of wiring, we yanked the wiring early on....that will come later) and began the end of the steering wheel. thankfully, i don't expect showroom quality, cause it definitely ain't ;)

i have to coat and sand a few more times before the wheel is done. here's what i used, a two part epoxy for the filling, then these for the coating

also, need to source a new horn contact
