So my t-stat (I believe) died on me about 2 weeks ago, temp gauge hits bottom and has functioned, coming up to maybe 1/8th the way up only 2 or 3 times since then. Gas gauge works properly and everything else seems fine so I ordered a new t-stat and gaskets/o-ring.

Last week I have suddenly started hearing a sound like the fan clutch is engaging all the time now (a roaring fan sound when I am revving the engine).

Before I go out and buy a new fan clutch or try to repair the one I have I was wondering if someone could listen to what I am hearing to confirm. I am hoping that this is just because the temp gauge/t-stat is not working and will go away once I replace the t-stat this week(end) but want to see what someone else thinks to make sure I am on the right track.

So anyone in the Carson area willing to meet with me or tomorrow I have softball up at Rancho so I could meet someone up there (game is at 7:45 i believe).

Nevermind, done lots of reading the last couple days and 99% sure my fan clutch is done for (i.e. no rebuilding). Seems to be staying on all the time and sounds somewhat like a large box fan turned up to 11..:D
Going to do the newspaper test real quick tonight before I head to Reno for softball.

I've no experience with this particular issue. Just had to chime in and say isn't great driving an old truck! Recently began driving my 60 to work daily. Almost immediately the tcase began leaking like a siv where it used to be just a drip. It's leaking in so many places I believe I will have to tear it down and replace all the seals .

Oh we'll, I still love driving it everyday.

Good luck with the fan clutch.

Good luck with the replacement, $$$$$$$$. I found a used Toyota fan and replaced the clutch oil, works great. The one on my truck when I bought it was not Toyota, when the clutch failed it free wheeled and failed to cool at all, if yours is running all the time that is a better way to fail.

You may try to flush the old clutch oil out and replace it with new. The Toyota fan is controlled by a bi-metal spring that moves a hydrostatic clutch if the clutch oil is gummed up that would cause the clutch to "engage" all the time.
Search the 80's forum for more information, they share the same fan as our 2F engines.

AISIN FCT-017 is a direct replacement (and believe OE) and I got it from Amazon for $65. Thought about doing the silicone oil change in it but I believe that the bearing is seized (fan does not really spin after vehicle has been running for a while. When I stopped the engine and attempted to turn the blades (which after being up to temp is should slightly) it popped then spun a bit.

And CE - definitely love driving it, but as I replace things something else seems to break or start leaking. I am replacing stuff as money allows but in some instances I have to have the truck running so I can get around (like wednesdays for softball), otherwise I ride my bike to work.

This weekend is already full of fun stuff, gonna put in a new t-stat with gaskets, fan clutch should be here on saturday so that will likely go in, and got a gallon of 80w90 gear oil so I can check the tranny, t-case, and diffs. Oh and not to forget the fun of the auxiliary heater hose that goes from the firewall to the heater valve that is leaking and needs to be replaced!!

Hope that I can have her running so that I can be at next weeks meeting.
