Here is a mildly interesting story.

My Dad and Brother went in together on a Lincoln AC-225 welder back in the 70's. Eventually, after Dad passed, it wound up in my possession. (My brother was in an apartment and really had no use for it.) I hung on to it for a number of years, but never had the $$ to do a 220V run from the service to my garage in the old house. One day I noticed that my BIL had a 220 service in one of his sheds so I offered it to him and he accepted. As far as I know he never plugged it in.

A couple of weeks ago he sold his house. Last night he asked me if I wanted the welder back. So I loaded it in the back of the 100 and hauled it home.

Our new house has the electrical service right outside the garage wall.

Today I popped the back cover off and cleaned out all the spider webs and dust. Everything inside looks pretty good. No insulation falling off or black smoke marks inside.

So the question is, should I run the cord inside to the dryer plug and see if it lights up. Or take in to Sierra welding to check out first?

BTW I was shocked to see Lincoln is still making the exact model welder in almost exactly the same shape and size.

All the wires look to be in pretty good repair?
If so, Id do it.
What's the worst that could happen?
I have the AC/DC unit. Its a TON O POWER. Im not very good with it though.
If you can get good with that, you can be GREAT with a mig!

Lemme know if you need any help.

I know a guy locally that can run the 220 for you. He did mine. I might have him do a second plug for the plasma. Its just EASIER!

Thanks, I have a guy that does my electrical stuff for me:grinpimp:.

Does you 220 outlet look like this?

Before I invest in wire and outlets I'd like to light the unit up, if it's Fubar I'll haul it off to the re-cycler. There's about 100# of copper in that beast so it should fetch a few $$$.

The thing should work , Im not sure if you can kill those?
If you think you will use it than go for it!

I think you should give it to me, since it's obviously an old piece of junk and wouldn't be worth anything to anyone:)

If there aren't any holes in the wires, there really isn't much that can go wrong with one. We used them in my high school shop for 20+ years, day in and day out. Only reason they were replaced, was they were so beat up you couldn't read the dials anymore.

Plug can be changed if you need another end. You can get them at Home Depot or Lowes for about $10.

I prefer the ac/dc version, but the a/c only one works just fine.

I'm convinced, I'll get a price on wiring an outlet and go from there.

If your really going to use it it prolly needs a 50A circuit .

ken
220V 50A single phase is what the plate call's for.
Our electrical service is on the garage wall so it shouldn't be to hard or expensive to run a 50A circuit to the inside wall.

Dan, the plug on the dryer circuit is a 30 amp service. You can probably test the lincoln on that plug, but keep the dials turned down so that it draws under 30 amps during the test. Weld someting maybe 3/16" or less. That should give you a good idea if she's still alive.

Geeze why would anybody be that happy I'm getting my own welder?

:flipoff2::grinpimp:

:D

Not sayin a WORD!!!!

Actually, in this activity...EVERYONE should have their own welder!
How many times have you thought to yourself when youre over at my place...."Jeezus, I wish he would just HURRY UP, quit F'IN around and DO THE WELD already!?".

Maybe the first time, after that I learned to let you work at your own pace and the results would be worth it. :flipoff2:

Besides the faster you get the work done the less of your beer I get to drink.
