Anyone know a local or semi local mechanic to Libertyville Il to repair the broken ignition on my wive's lx470? I can get it towed to the dealer but thought I might see if anyone knows of a small shop guy that can deal with such a repair.
The ignition turns and simply does nothing. It has no resistance and is stuck in the on position. I had to remove the battery terminal so shut things off. I am guessing the entire steerinfg column might need to come out cause it appears that the ignition is somehow attached to the column.

Any help would be grat otherwise I will get it towed to the local dealer and accept the pain.....

You can try Gages Lake Auto, they seem to do pretty good work at a fair price. Although I took my 4Runner to Libertyville Toyota for the timing belt and they were actually right in the ballpark on price with GLA and 2 other shops I got quotes from.

Do you live in Libertyville? That is right down the road from me.

The LX470 frequently breaks the steering column upper bracket from what I am told. That allows the key to just spin in the slot.

The upper bracket is $253.96 list and requires two break away head bolts at $3.43 ea.

My AllData tells me it's only 1.3 hours of labor to do with manual tilt and 1.6 with power tilt.

I live in green oaks, hidden in the woods...

I spoke to the lexus dealer of Highland Park and they are going to charge me 600$ to do the repair. It will be done today and then I am going to get busy looking for a mechanic to do the laundry list of other crap. I spoke to a local bud and he said he is good friends with a mechanic at the dealer that works side craap from home. Might go that route considering he knows the suv.

I was close to tearing the thing apart but got scared after searching the internet...looked like i needed to remove the entire steering column....

Yup. Gotta remove the steering column.

I would ask the dealer what the Hell they are changing. The list on the part is $250. Not my cost, but full list. Assuming it has power tilt with the higher labor rate that's 1.6 hours.

Even at $100 per hour labor rate that works out to $410, not $600.

went and paid for the thing. 675$. What a bargin.
They said that two bolts had to be drilled out. I said did they use a power drill or the old school hand drill our ansestors used to use... They didn't appreciate my humor. But they did offer to wash the thing for free. I took a pass on that, grabbed a cold soda and a bagel from the waiting room and left.

I am going to learn more about the dude that works there as a mechanic shortly. He apparently has a home shop. I am cool with paying fair rates, but this one seemed a bit on the high side.

Two bolts are tamper proof so a thief can't just pull the ignition lock in a parking lot.

I have to think removing those bolts are part of the job since you can't exactly do it without taking those bolts out.

1.6 does seem a bit light to me to pull a column, but that's what the book says.

like i said a while back, I cant find anyone resonable in my area. Not enough redneck gearhead action in my hood. kind of sad and lonely in that department.

might be worth it to drop it off there for future service. the tow was 165 and the place is about 7 miles away......
