who knows about the GX470? i have read the build up in one thread or another, but what are the opinions about it and what about tech? what could be done in the real world with what is available in the US market?

It's essentially a 4Runner. Wheel wells are pretty small in terms of fitting big tires. 4th gen Runners seem to be a pretty big step down from 3rd gen - sp pretty much a road rig.

I like the way they look and I'm sure the lux is top notch. But a seriously questionable base for an offroad project. Too pretty and not much to work with compared to a host of alternatives.

Nay

GX470 is a really excellent suv, as is the 4th gen 4Runner. There isn't too much on buildups of the GX but armor, coilovers and other options are avail for the willing. Some of the mods for the 4th gen 4Runner and FJCruiser are applicable to the GX470.

The Trail Lex is the only heavily modded GX I've seen. As a offroad suv, it's great. The Trail Lex did the Rubicon w/o lockers but as a wagon to enjoy the backcountry, you can do alot to it and is it's real mission - just like the Prado which it is based on.

4Runner, Prado and GX all share the same chassis. The Prado is the same body but without all of the stupid plastic everywhere and with a straight front axle and deisel. Like First Toy said, Trail Lex is the only serious buildup of a GX I have seen in the states. ARB is readily available for the rear diff, not sure if one exists for the front diff. At the time of buildup on Trail Lex (Four Wheeler Magazine online has full build and articles) there was no front locker available but I think ARB has one now. Looks to be a pretty capable trail vehicle if you don't hit major rock crawling. 60k fully loaded is alot of money to take out and beat up though. I would buy a 4Runner and take the left over money to do a SAS and custom build armor. I believe Demello Off Road has a SAS system for the new Taco's that would probably work with the 4Runner.

The Prado does not have a SFA. They are all pretty close mechanically and the Prado has the same amount of plastic as the GX, just slightly different styling. Unless you go for the poverty pack Prado which has minimal plastic.

4R, GX,Prado,FJC are all in the same 'family' mechanically. The Tacoma is somewhat but there are more differences.

I stand corrected. I rechecked the Nov 05 issue of AUSTRALIAN 4WD MONTHLY and looked where I thought I saw a bottom level Prado with a SFA but it was a bottom level 100 series. Thanks for the correction.

I know the rear suspension on the Taco's is totally different than the Prado, GX, 4Runner and FJ but I was under the impression that the front suspension was the same. Is the IFS different too?

Chat or 100-Series or FJC or anywhere but 80's Tech. We do SFA and serious trucks here; none of that "SUV" fluff here in 80's Tech. :D

The Tacoma is different in minor front end stuff and the rear leafs (vs. linked wagons). Also, I don't think the Taco has fully boxed frame rails as the wagons do.

Yeah I think chat or some other tech forum is appropriate...

Thanks for the info. Agree on different forum.

no reason to keep it around, my bad dawgs.

i knew the only really worthwhile place to ask a question about this vehicle was here and since i have the 80 i wanted to know what you fellas thought.

Let's get rid of it. yep let's throw it in the river. whichever is closest i dont care. maybe the Pacific, it's bigger than a river.

Stupid 4runners, prados whatever they are.:ban:

BTB, Slomo your avatar is fantastic, i wish i could claim that mine are just brass

I second that.

In my last post I meant to ask whether or not I am responsible for moving it. I dont know how. I can hardly type.
