Lets talk headers

i needed a new muffler so i thought 'what the hell, let's do it right' and i went out and got an LCE header, magnaflow muffler and 2.25" exhaust all the way back. it cost me right around $1000 installed with tax. the difference was minimal on the highway and completely nil around town. to top it all off it sounded like crap without the cat so i had to shell out some more cash for a new one.

i wouldn't even consider doing it again. the 22RE is a horsepower turd and cannot be easily polished.

live with what you've got or buy a bigger engine.

I have the coated SS header from LCE. It sits between the pimped out EFI Pro 2.5L LCE 22RE long block and a 2.25 inch exhaust system w/ high flow cat and Flowmaster.
Below 3000 rpm I couldn’t tell a difference between the stock exhaust manifold and the header other than the sound of the exhaust. Above 3000 I think that there is a noticeable and measurable difference with the header: On my drive home there was a long steep interstate hill. Every day for a couple of weeks before I installed the header I’d floor the accelerator all the way up the hill to determine the max speed I could maintain at the top of the hill without down shifting. Then, after I installed the header I repeated the test. The increase in speed at the top of the hill with the header was about four mph. Not all that exciting, but hey, I couldn’t even make it up the hill in 5th with the old engine.
As other have said, the LCE header is CARB approved/certified.
They still make it.
I had to bend a small metal splash guard/heat shield out of the way to make it fit. Otherwise, no issues with fit or quality of the product.
I was hesitant to buy it at the time, but I’d buy it a gain without much of a second thought.

Hi,
I installed the LC Engineering 1.5" ceramic coated stainless header about 5 years ago on my '88 22RE. At the same time I replaced the entire exhaust with the LC aluminized 2" cat back and an aftermarket cat. My truck is otherwise all stock and totally worn out.
The most noticable performance difference is at highway speeds, such as what comes in handy while merging on the highway.
I have not experienced any improvement at my preferred speed (0 to 1.5 mph).
The exhaust is very loud. It came with a sticker for the CARB emissions inspection. My oxygen sensor and air injection manifold went right in and I haven't had any codes or other problems.
I recall i had to modify some heat shielding to complete the installation, and one of the studs took the threads with it (the one in the way back down low, natch).
