Let's swap a motor and do some other stuff to a 60.... (1 Viewer)

Had about 30 minutes to play with the truck today....didn't even get to start it to hear that glorious motor :(

I've been thinking about my Duramax air cleaner box and how to get more air into it. Think I figured it out. Going to pipe in some additional air from the fender area into the side of the box....pretty sure this was the original hole for the factory air cleaner. The pipe is going to double as a mount for the box too.....kind of tying the box to the pipe, pipe to the fender. Plus....I cut the box wrong when I was being impulsive....so the pipe will help hide that :)

Plugged my LCD gauge panel in and took a really lousy pic. I forgot how cool the green is in these 60s.....

Just about zero done on Friday on the 60. Busy busy day with paying work in the shop which is fine by me.

Got my intake elbow mounted to the airbox and the fender. Did exactly what I wanted it to and really secured the airbox.....looks pretty cool too. One more bracket for the other side that will most likely incorporate some kind of mount for the catch can we'll be running. I'm tempted now to seal up the side of the airbox and not worry about making a connection to the inner fender. Might just run some perforated metal in there to keep the big junk out.

Pretty sure this is there first 8700 mile all original 93 Supra we've had in the shop this year :) :) :)

Got into intercooler piping today. I had bought this Woodward bead roller a while back along with the pieces for bead rolling tubing. Pretty sure it's not designed for 16ga stainless tubing :) We had to stiffen it up....flexed like crazy when I tried it out. Seemed to do a pretty good job once stiffened. Quite the workout with the 16ga.

First piece.....this one went back in the rollers to get a little more love. Certainly not as much of a bead on the stainless as I would like but I think it will be fine with good clamps on it.

Cut some openings out in the old girl......no going back now.

Bunch of cutting and fitting....this is how it will route.
20220404_155648.jpeg

Passenger side, all done, bead rolled(better beads on the ends). Ready for some Tig work next.

Both sides done....not sure they're identical but I'm not too worried about it. Nice to see the lower valance on too.....been off for a while.

Drivers side....not sure if I will do a 90 silicone elbow here or a 45....I'll get these tacked up and tightened down, then work the upper pipes. Going to try to do the up pipe in one piece.

The 74 needs to be worked on next....lots of oil leaks, needs brakes/lines/etc. Great old truck.

20220404_175212.jpeg

Bought this for the 74.....I've been buying old catalogs when I find them. Maybe Freddy, who owned the 74 since new, had a Cepek catalog from 73 that he browsed thru picking parts out for his new ride. Southern California truck and Cepek was there so maybe Freddy even went to their showroom....there's a couple Cepek stickers on the green truck :)

Bought this for the guys to make transmission/transfer disassembly and reassembly easier......brand new old stock from what I can tell. Amazing.

Spent some time on our catch can bracket....it's evolving into a multi-purpose bracket. It will hold the catch can, the boost controller(barely visible in these pics....using a Turbosmart unit), also the airbox AND the AC dryer. We'll make the addition for the dryer tomorrow. Then build out the AC lines.

Almost got all my intercooler pipes done.....big job. I had a ton of time in these. Pretty happy with them. Need to button one last pipe up....then finish them. Might get really creative with the finish :)

Getting ready for a bunch of work on this clean FJ62....hoping one day it gets a diesel :)

20220407_120413.jpeg

Finished up our catch can, boost controller, airbox mount and AC dryer bracket. AC lines next week.
20220408_174020.jpeg

I built this 3/4" fitting to mount where some kind of sensor was in the Duramax air box....must have been an air flow meter or something.

Kind of cool to see all the gauges working.....need to work on the tach and of course our standalone gauges.

20220408_173910.jpeg

Some new stuff to install next week.

20220408_175455.jpeg

I was able to grab second gear in the driveway today!

This guy left today.....pretty amazing car and so nice to see one completely and I mean COMPLETELY stock....

dammmnnnn. I hope my intercooler piping comes back that good. Also I need to look into this catch can you got on there, im currently running a mishimoto... you keep giving me ideas and spending my money!
I have made a living for the last 20 years talking people into spending money. Ha.

@orangefj45 can get you the Flashlube catch can. It's a nice part. Has a drain tube with a petcock that we need to install on this truck once things are buttoned up.

Gifu turned me on to this build thread as he and I have been stuffing diesels in a few cruisers of late, and I have been playing with a scrapyard rescue 60, but WOW, this is next level.

@gifu and I have been chatting about 60s all day today. I'm going to pester you guys for how to stuff one of these diesels in a 40....I've got one to do :)

Good day today.....lots of stuff done. Pretty much finalized for the shakedown...if I want to take the radiator and intercooler out to coat them, I will once I've run this thing a bit. The last big thing to do now will be the exhaust. Need to start on that this week.

Started the day off with some powder coating today.....figured it was a good time to do it since everything was apart to do the AC lines(condenser has to come out to get the AC lines in and out).

Used a very low texture black powder coat. Pretty nice finish.

These were all prepped and smoothed during the fab stage. Some weird brackets on this build.

Blasted

20220412_123155.jpeg

First batch.....the textured powder only takes 10 minutes. Usually it's 30 minutes I think.
20220412_134645.jpeg

Second batch....
20220412_140003.jpeg

All of the family together again :) Being able to do this stuff in-house in these small batches is really a luxury. No waiting, no downtime, just prep, spray, bake. Love it.

We were able to build our AC lines today. Another luxury.....having this crimp tool so we can do them in-house. Classic Air is right down the street from us....we used to be able to run over and have them build up lines when needed. Got to be a total pain in the ass with getting them done in a timely manner AND they got super expensive....not sure they're even wanting to do lines now. So we make our own. Coldhose.com is who we get all our fittings and supplies from. GREAT place.

We ran them, indexed them, took them off, crimped, done.

This thing paid for itself in a few uses.

Painted the front of the rad support black. It looked pretty crappy.....wanted it to look a little better. I should have sprayed it with Raptor when I had it all apart.
20220412_145244.jpeg

Brackets all assembled with their parts on them. Lots going on with this one.

20220412_165840.jpeg

Installed and doing it's job. AC lines all hooked up. Also put on the manifold's heat shield.

20220412_171615.jpeg

The breather line port turned out really cool. Need to add some clamps to the breather hoses.
20220412_171629.jpeg

Intercooler pipes go back in tomorrow, we'll suck down the AC and see how that goes.....then I'm going to get the grille installed so this dude can have it's face back.

20220412_174654.jpeg

Decided the world has enough plain white FJ60s....this one will get some flair.
20220412_163922.jpeg

I also thought this McLaren needed some more flair so I gave it some eyes :). The car with the Manta Ray for a spoiler. Ha.

Good day today.....someone's face got put on :)

I had bought one of these to play around with

For $50, it was kind of a no-brainer. My original one was rough. Plus, I had to grind this thing to make it fit the intercooler......I have no issues grinding things made in China. We'll see how many months it lasts.

20220413_145550.jpeg

What's this blue button doing illuminated?? Blowing cold air is what. AC is imperative in FL......year round.

20220413_172226.jpeg

Since we don't have a tach signal any longer....well, at least one that the AC amplifier can use, we removed the RPM sensing resistor on the AC amplifier board and bingo.....AC works with the FJ60 amplifier. Down side is the AC compressor is on when the truck is cranking. I'm not sure I feel like that's a big deal on this motor. It wasn't cycling so I gave that red knob about 1/8 of a turn to the right and it started cycling. Going to run it like this to see how things go.

Looking good......tomorrow we'll chase down a really strange fuel leak at the boost compensator(where it bolts to the injection pump) and then it's kind of down to exhaust work. Might give it a wash and wax tomorrow too :)
20220413_174728.jpeg

That is awesome - I want to see those stripes put on!
