Just replaced all belts and alternator. Thanks for the info. on the belt replacement. Anyhow, replaced spark plugs with NGK and got the gap right. Now I've noticed that my idle is 'lumpy' is the only way to describe it. It doesn't 'loop' up and down but will idel smoothly for a few split seconds then go down and back up as quickly. Thoughts welcome.
 
I'm bumping this old post because I have a similar problem.

The idle on my 62 was dead solid before I replaced the alt (w/ OEM) this weekend and tightened the belts up. It isn't too bad now, but it is a little "lumpy" and definitely different than before.

Has anyone had an experience where belt tension impacted their idle speed?
 
Sure you've got the right plugs? BPR4EY I think? depends on your truck what is it ??? 2F , 3F engine ?
Are the plugs the same make/model plug you removed? Are you sure that all the plug leads are seated properly? Is the other end of each wire seated to the distributor cap properly? For that matter are you sure you put the right wires back on the right plugs? They are numbered on the ditributor cap. #1 is the front of the engine.... #6 is at the back.
Just some ideas...

I actually noticed the same thing when I replaced the ACdelco alternator with the OEM. I busted the voltage regulator trying to get it off the old one and ended up getting a cheapy from the local parts store which may or may not be the problem...
 
I have a 62 similar problem. Idles OK but a little low (550) but only sometimes.
Less lumpy but low and "uneven", probably because at lower limit of idle.

Motor is in great shape, new belts, plugs, wires, fuel filter, oil-filler gasket, air filter. EGR is working as it should.

Haven't done anything about it, as it is not too bad. More annoying than anything.

Could it be due to holes in the exhaust? Uneven backpressure? I can't think of anything else. There are a couple of holes in the tailpipe after the cat.
 
I'm probably not going to worry about the idle as it really isn't that bad at all. I listened to it for a while yesterday (maybe to long listening as my wife asked me if the truck was gonna cook my dinner!) and noticed something else which may or may not be normal. I was poking around and checking vacuum connections while the engine was running. At one point my hand bumped into the oil dipstick and the idle stumbled a bit. I pulled it out an bit and the engine started to bog down even more. Is that normal?

On another funny note... when i went out to take a look yesterday, i pull the hood release and nothing happens. The cable stays out and there is no tension on it. I spend the next 45 minutes fishing an un-bent wire coathanger around the hood release mechanism behind the grill. I finally managed to grab the cable and get the release to engage after a bunch of attempts. I think I moved the latch a bit when i installed my tranny cooler, so I lubed it up, made sure it was in the original location, and it now works fine. Be warned, make sure you pay attention to the details... or you might get locked out of your engine!

Based on the oilstick bump thing, I would recommend changing out your PCV valve.
