Hey guys! I have a leaky power steering unit on my FJ60. I have tightened and replaced the hoses and it still leaks. I thought it was leaking from the reservoir and I replaced the little "o" ring, but that did not help. I understand that replacing it can be quite costly and a FJ40 Cruzier friend of mine told me to replace it with a GM power steering unit. Any ideas? :wrench:

Time for a GM Saginaw!!! The pump will cost you around $50.00, and if you do not want to fabricate a mount, you can get a custom made mount from different suppliers. MAF sells one of those.

I have seen kits to replace all the gaskets and seals in them but have not heard about many people trying that. I had a lot of issues getting mine to seal up on the high pressure line going into the gear box below. The GM mod sounds like a good idea just wonder if you have to get a custom hose made for the high pressure line coming out of the pump. Just make sure it is not the high pressure hose leaking before you pull the pump.

Although many people here warned me against putting on a rebuilt unit, I started out putting on a rebuilt Toyota unit from Napa. They were right. After a little over a year, it was leaking. But I just couldn't get myself to spend the outrageous money Toyota wanted for a new unit. Especially since I thought it's performance was marginal on 33s and I wanted to allow for even larger tires in the future.

So I put on the Saginaw unit and I love it. I was lazy and bought a bracket from Iron Pig Offroad. The stock lines fit with no modification (I couldn't believe it either). I also put on a pulley that allowed for the cruiser wide belts. Pretty easy project.

For me, it was a great upgrade. I don't have a smog pump in my rig and this made belts easier for me. I now have two belts running the water pump. Also, the Saginaw unit puts out more boost making turning larger tires easy. I think this is a great upgrade.

Thanks for the ideas guys...I think I will try the GM PS with a bracket. I will let you know the outcome! Thanks! :wrench:
