G'day Folks,

I have a leaking rear main seal. Or at least I assume this is the problem. I have a steady drip, drip of engine oil that gathers at at the bottom of the bell housing.

The truck is a 1984 HJ47. I would like to replace the seal and I understand this means removing the gearbox. While it is out is there anything else I should consider doing? It clunks going into reverse and is a bit 'notchy' when shifting gear, but doesn't jump out of gear.

Any advice would be warmly received.

Any advice or tricks of the trade on actually removing the gearbox would also be helpful.

Cheers and thanks,

Ben

don't know the diesels well, but the gassers tend to have the oil pans loosen up and appear that the rear main is leaking. you may check your pan bolts just in case.

if it is the main, consider pilot bearing, t/o bearing and clutch disk while you're there.

what tranny? is the clunk mildly annoying or is it an issue?
