I was trying to change out my rearview mirror, and all of a sudden. My radio quit working. Then , I tried to start my truck and , nothing. Then I waited a while and tried again and it made that machine gun sound . lots of fast ticking, like maybe a dead battery. So I unhooked both battery cables and now I'm completely screwed. If u turn the key to the on position it sounds like rice krispy cereal. Lots of real quiet faint popping and electrical noises. I'm too afraid to try and start it. But now w the theft system is flashing , the car acts completely dead. The dashboard light will come on and headlights but other than that it just acts dead to the world. And this all started from trying to change out a rearview freaking mirror. I'm new here and bought this thing 2 weeks ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The guy that owned my TLC before me wired the replacement (non-Toyota) mirror wired the power for the compass to the fuel pump fuse. It blew during a stop at a gas station on the Colorado / New Mexico border. Thankfully I had a full set of fused but that was a really hard thing to find.

Mike I checked a couple of fuses, but they all looked good . and there's more relays than fuses. I do know that when I unhooked the battery cables is when thing got worse. Maybe because I had the key still in the ignition. That's why the theft light is flashing

If it's a factory mirror maybe a wire got pinched. If it's an aftermarket wire who knows where the installer connected the power (assuming it has a compass and auto dimming)

The one that came on there was autodimming and compass. The one I bought just had map lights. But the connector fit so I just used the factory connector and when I plugged it in that's when the radio went dead. So then I used the wires that came with the new mir and s*** kept going downhill. But the new wire harness is identical looking to the factory stuff except it had a fuse on it. I just don't know why my truck won't start now.

Yeah... my aftermarket mirror had all that... when I plugged in the new, apparently made of gold and silver because it was expensive as hell, Toyota factory mirror I heard a POP and disconnected the wiring. Nothing was wrong. The TLC started fine, no blinking lights, nothing. My fuel pump fuse didn't completely blow until about two months later. I checked and sure enough, they had wired the mirror to the fuel pump fuse (under the hood). I don't know why the fuse let me run for so long but eventually it shut me down.

Might not be related but I'm going to bet that the wiring doesn't match and something popped that shouldn't have. My popped fuse was easy to see. It was blackened.

I should have used the wires it came with because it has a fuse on it. I connected this mirror myself and all I did was just unhook the old one and hook in the new one. And it blew the radio and now I guess it won't let the truck start ?

I'd start by checking voltage at the battery, then fusible links near the battery, and keep tracing into the electrical until you find something or nothing. If the mirror circuit grounded out for some reason, hopefully it broke the fuse and didn't burn anything else.

FWIW, it's a good thing to disconnect the battery when working on electrical, digging out interior bulbs, etc.

I have a had a similar problem in the past. My Mirror had rattled away from the windshield because my subwoofer then it fell and when it fell and detached from the wires it shut my whole dash and radio off and the battery died many times and killed a brand new battery also. I cannot remember the fix but my wires are all now crimped and i drive without a rearview mirror.

Well the bought a new battery and it starts now. The radio is still not powering up , and I'm afraid to even try and hook up the mirror again. I hate dealerships ,but I guess I'm gonna have to take it in just to hook up a freaking mirror. Maybe I'll get the to do a health test while they its there.
Has anyone ever had a health test done .

So I said screw it and hooked the mirror up. The radio DOES work, but it doesn't come on when the truck starts up. I have to eject the CD and then put it back in. Go figure. ? I'm much relieved now that the truck is actually running. .

Dillon....what is a health test? I would pass on the mirror if it caused the issues to begin with. The OE radio is a turd so no lose there. Drive it around for a few days. Look through all your fuses.

But if not an OE mirror I would pass on putting it in. These trucks are full of electronic stuff so one thing can daisy chain others. I am also in Hot Springs willing to help if needed. PM me for contact.

Check your fuses. I've had fuses that are partially broken and worked sometimes. Was a headache thinking something was wrong with the radio.
